Root Titanium Backup - The definitive answer

There appears to be a lot of discussion / confusion over what a user should be backing up and reinstalling using Titanium Backup before and after flashing new ROMs, etc, and I thought it might be a good idea to have one (short?) thread where the definitive answer can be logged for posterity.

As I understand it, by and large you should only backup user apps and restore all apps with data bacause the ROM you're flashing will contain system software that may confict with previous system versions if you try and restore them.

Please correct me if this understanding is incorrect as that's the point of this thread!

Back up everything as you may need to restore to the same rom.

Restore missing apps with data is what I would use on a different ROM. I'm not sure there is a definitive answer.

Essentially if you are restoring to a new rom which you HAD to wipe, avoid restoring anything in [square brackets].

I've been doing it for so long, I just know what can and can't be restored so I restore everything and then unselect what I know not to restore.

That's what I was after Dan. Basically, I figured that the majority of times folks here are backing up and restoring is as a result of flashing new ROMs or updates to ROMs already running. Think your answer hits the nail on teh head for the majority of people, the majority of the time.
