Help To encrypt or not

Hi all
Having had my nearly new Moto G stolen I'm a bit more security conscious (yeah, too late I know!)
My provider blocked and blacklisted the phone immediately and all important information was secured with passport manager and encrypted lockers etc. anyway.
I've replaced it with another Moto G as I was so pleased with the phone I saw no need to change.
I see that under security it's possible to encrypt the phone. It takes about an hour to do and everything has to be decrypted when the phone is switched on.
I am wondering whether this is worth doing or whether it slows the performance down.
Any help would be welcome.

I personally haven't done it. Of course, I haven't had a phone lost or stolen either. Maybe if I was in your shoes I'd do it, but at the moment, I don't see a need for encryption on my phone. From what I've seen from people that root and put custom ROMs on it plays havoc with that. Now, if you don't do that (as you mentioned you haven't rooted) maybe it'll be good for you. I could be totally wrong about what I've heard, so if someone else can chime in who knows more about it, great.

Edit: fix an autocorrect word, from pays to plays.
