Root To everyone who hates their captivate. Get a ROM!

Yes, the Captivate as it comes sucks. Yes I will never buy another Samsung phone because they care too much about making money, their next best phone, and what they can do to have a better launch instead of providing already available updates to their customers. They don't understand that keeping customers happy and having good morals is the way to make money. However, the hardware is good and there is a great community to make custom Rom's for our phone.

If you haven't tried any of these, then I understnad you hating your phone. The Cognition Rom (Currently 3.04) Found here on XDA Captivate Android Development - xda-developers is like a brand new phone. It keeps it as similar to stock as posible while making it much faster and more stable. There are many other ROM's there too for different looks, speeds, and Android Versions.

It fixes shutdown problems, wifi issues, gps, stability, laggy phones, and pretty much every problem I see with the captivate. Yes there are limitations to Android operating system, but at least we now have the best Android has to offer. They are currently working on a gingerbread ROM too.

I guess I'm just writing this to let others know what they are missing out on if they haven't tried ROM's. And for those who have, which I'm sure is a majority, vouch.

I thought about getting cognition but looked at all the stuff u gotta do just to put it on and it looks like a hassel. I will be moving on to the atrix if 2.2 isn't out by the time it hit shelves.

See that's what I'm saying... lots of people don't have ROM's because the idea of putting one on is overwhelming at times. But it makes your phone so much better and it's easy. There are videos over at XDA, but I list the basic steps.

Installation instructions here:
FAQ - Cognition Wiki

All you have to do is:

Root your phone, this is very easy. Instructions found here: [PROGRAM] Updated:One Click Root/UnRoot (Mac and PC) - xda-developers. Rooting your phone allows clockwork to do it's magic.

Install clockwork recovery from the market

Download cognition and copy it over to phone (It's a zip file).

Hold down power button and select recover (Clockwork adds this option) which will reboot your phone and let you select a zip file to install. Or you can open clockwork and say flash rom. Select install ROM. Select the cognition one. Now your phone is great.

I almost cancelled AT&T before I did this... now I'm happy with the phone again.

I thought the exact same thing when I first thought about rooting but, just watch these videos and do exactly what he does, step by step, and you will be fine. I promise. Read up on it and do some research. Watch the videos first so you have an idea of what to do then go for it. It is pretty hard to "hard brick" so dont worry to much about that.

Yeah, they could get a ROM, or they could just get a different phone. A lot of people don't get phones, just so they can spend all day and tweaking the damn thing. They buy it expecting it to already do what they need it to do. I personally love messing around with phones, but my wife? she could care less, and therefore will probably never get an Android. People buy these phones based on popularity and marketing, not really knowing what they are dealing with.

Well said.

When I try to explain to people why I think Android is better than Apple, I make the comparison to buying ice cream at the local shop:

One of the guys behind the counter is wearing the name tag 'Steve J.' He is really good at mixing ice cream, and has his patented secret sauce. On the menu, you can choose different flavors (android, etc.), or you can simply choose the 'Steve J specialty'. If you are the type that will accept what Steve J says is the best, that's what you should go with.

However, it is what I do to my cone that makes it the best for me. I don't care if Sammy (the other guy) doesn't put the best stuff on it for me, because I can just do it myself.

LOL. I might have to come back and read this when I'm good and toastie, but I get what you are saying. The same thing is happening with mobile phones now as with desktops and laptops 10-15 years ago. I had a PC laptop that was my favorite back in '02 i think. Ran better then anyone. I think 80% of the programs and apps on it were just to "keep it optimized". Got bored and bought a MAC lol. Now its phones for a bit.

Its not everyone who can go around buying $200 phones every six months. Its one thing to do that with bargain bin phones, but not smart phones. That's like someone who buys a junker car for $350, runs it till it dies, then buys another one, compared to doing that with $50,000 BMWs.

No stock phone will ever be perfect. If you want a phone that does everything how you want it to, get android, and get a ROM. If you can't be bothered to do that, get an iPhone and go away. I'm sick of seeing soccer moms with incredibles and captivates, and just knowing that they have the stock home screen, and the only app they have downloaded is talking tom cat...

Basically, I suppose I'm agreeing with you. Just with a more jaded way of expressing it.

My signature sums is all up.
