To Everyone Who IS/WAS Having GPS Problems

Well I've managed to get GPS to work using these settings:

Second suggested setup (from other posts and claimed to have great results):
SUPL/CP Settings/SErver FQDN Type/Custom Config
Application settings/Operation Mode/MS Based
SUPL/CP Settings/Server/supl.google.com
SUPL/CP Settings/Port/7276

Accuracy - 30
SkyHook - On

Then you have to reboot, and make sure GPS is turned on. I turn mine on using the power control widget.

You don't need to change any files and dialing *#*#1472365#*#* doesn't call a number, it's just a way to get access to a configuration screen that you can't get to otherwise. After you enter that sequence, click on the "Application Settings" button that you'll see.
hey i just got my samsung captivate and i have tried dailing the sequence*#*#1472365*#*# and it says "rejected" am i missing something?

i was able to get my gps working using the following (using port 7276):
Fix for Samsung Galaxy (Vibrant, Captivate) GPS Problems

except i didn't do step #6 which is turning on "use wireless networks" because i wanted to test the true gps

it worked well for walking navigation to the local whole foods

then i tested it out using 'My Tracks' this morning on my scooter commute to work: commute 2010.08.19 - Google Maps

results aren't perfect but aren't too bad either...

Thank you for providing tracks. With your tracks, In some places the Captivate appears to be off by as much as 300ft. Which is as bad as I usually get. Fine in a car when you are doing 70mph down a highway, but crappy if you are trying to run/walk/bike with the phone.

I hope Samsung comes through for us!

Sounds hopeful, but I wonder why they could have it working great on Epic, and still have test ROMS out there (2 now) that don't work right for Captivate.

Yeah, I hear you on that, I don't have an answer. The hardware is supposedly the same, right? I suppose another explanation is that engadget just got lucky on their test; some have had Captivate/Vibrant work properly on occasion too.

Exactly... My wife's vibrant worked perfectly for a week.

Yep. That's the problem. Given so many of those stories, I don't have confidence that any 1 Captivate out there is good for GPS right now. Ultimately, failure.

But, I feel pretty sure they will get it fixed, despite the initial failures at the moment. Like another poster said, these roms coming down right now may be for testing anything but the GPS for all we know. They definitely seem to be showing improvement in other areas.

Okay everyone, I finally got around to trying the [STOCK ROM] I897UCJH2 (Captivate) that is posted on [STOCK ROM] I897UCJH2 (Captivate) - xda-developers

Use *#1234# to confirm your ROM version. I'm running UCJH2. I deleted GPS data while at a gas station and saw my captivate get a lock in 2 minutes.

If anyone wants the LbsTestMode settings I will post them. But for now it would seem the Samsung firmware update might correct the problem.

I am curious to know why using the google SUPL server results in getting a lock in less than a minute but I'll take my current config until something offical from Samsung is released in the US.

I get a lock in under 10 seconds every time with my Aria. And it tracks perfectly. I want to come back to the captivate but until it can do that, I'm staying with the Aria.

Anyone Else think Samsungs statement that they will "optimize" (and not "fix") the GPS only means it will be slightly better through a software patch that attempts to mask a hardware issue?

No.

It'll probably be a software patch that enables "wireless networks" and removes the option to turn it off.

Samsung: "BOOM! HEADSHOT!" :D
Galaxy S users:

I just made a roatrip from Detroit to Iowa and used Google Maps on my bone stock, month old Captivate. I didnt loose a signal once and never got sidetracked or lost. My gps is working great with no change in settings and use wireless networks unchecked.

Yep! I bet they will release a Captivate version 2 with an updated GPS chip.

And I will certainly not purchase one.

Too bad because on paper the Captivate rocks.

why are you guys freaking out, the galaxy s in europe already has the fix so they will fix ours...i hate how people just start rumors that its the hardware or there won't be a fix or samsung won't do anything about it. They personally said they will so....they will..

They're obviously doing something to it with the leaked firmwares

I too have had flaky performance from the GPS. However, one thing I have noticed is that once the GPS has been kick started by some application, it seems to work for all applications. This morning over several hours I could not get the GPS to lock using either GPS Test, Maps, My tracks, etc. I then started RunTracker and after 15 to 30 seconds the GPS went from red to orange and then to green, at which point RunTracker was following my location correctly. I then went back to GPS test and it now had locked on between 4 and 6 satellites with 32 ft accuracy. My Tracks and Maps also now worked. I have used RunTracker four times now over the past few days, and it always seems to get the GPS going.

Where did you get that info? There has been no actual fix for the GPS on the Galaxy S. Not an official one and not a leaked one.

the 2 leaked firmware for the captivate?? That have GPS logging...obviously they are doing something to the gps. Check out samsung's twitter page as well and the many articles linked in the captivate forum to official gps fixes in september...

I'm locked into ATT for family reasons and really want this phone. But until people here say its fixed I'm not touching it. I sincerely hope it is fixable and not just patched. This is to say it is not a design or hardware issue like the iphone4. Do the knowledgeable people hear think that is the case?

I stopped by ATT yesterday to really look at the phone, touch and feel etc. I found it interesting that the store here is not even pushing the iphone4 but instead the 3GS.

An idle thought... what must it be like to be the exec in charge of cell phones for ATT and the 2 top marquis phones have severe issues?

I know they are working on it but you said it was fixed on the euro version. It is not...

I have the unofficial rom on samsung-firmware.com and I think the only change was to enable 'use wireless networks' in location settings.
