Root To root or not to root? Memory space issues!

Hello community.

OK I've got my Desire for 3 months now. I realy think that I have done the best phone choice of my life. But now after installing/uninstalling/testing many apps I have capacity problems with internal memory. I'm using the method of installing apps directly to the SD. But I always have the low on space notification on my task bar. 75% of what I have installed is on my sd. The rest 25% is HTC Sense apps. My Desire runs on stock froyo and combined with htc sense I have the feeling of perfection while using my phone. Everything run smoothly. No complaints.

So what are my options here? Root? I suppose that I will have to erase everything on my phone memory so I would have more space. If this is the case then I have to ask for your suggestions. a) I will have to stick with launcherpro and I dont like it. No htc sense on non stock froyo right? b) I have many security and privacy concerns for using those roms that some groups have developed. Are they stable as atleast stock froyo? Are they safe? Is there a good phone resources administration? Which ones would you suggest?

If you want Sense, I hear LeeDroid is the way to go :)

If you want vanilla, I found DeFroST very nice. OpenDesire is awesome too :D
 
Does not matter, since on my Incredible:

1. I used Android 2.1, stock 2.2, rooted 2.2, Skyraider, etc.
2. Started clean each time (data and cache cleaned)
3. Zero social apps or mail cache issues

In spite of all of this, EVERY time I end up with "low on space" error and I have over 300mb of space out out of 748mb free.

Android OS has a memory management problem- period.
 
Modaco r8 without the paid kitchen is more or less stock with a few basic changes. It's a little out of date now. One of the reasons I made my rooted stock ROM was because I was unhappy with the Modaco rom.
 
I am a member. I become one to support the dev. One of the benefits of that is I can "beta test" new roms in the making.

It wouldn't do to give beta out freely (I don't mean freely in a monetary sense). really I am paying to get add free site, like they do here.
 
That's the rationalisation, but people are generally paying to get the ROM/use the kitchen. I'm not saying it should be banned, I just don't like it myself. It wouldn't be permitted on xda, which is why he's got his own forum.

People distribute beta tests all the time. I got my download tool working well by releasing early versions (as soon as I knew it was safe and wouldn't brick a phone).
 
Fair enough.

TBH, I don't even use sense ROMs anymore, so the money I spent is pretty much wasted.
 
Most Sense-based ROMs are more or less the same (the same goes really for the AOSP ones). People sometimes use high numbers (v7.9.3) to make it sound like it's been developed heavily, or they list features that come as standard in froyo, or meaningless features likes 'fast' or 'stable'. It's often really just a case of 'stock + root + wallpaper/theme +/- a few apps'.
 
On stock 2.1 before and after I rooted, I was constantly getting the low space icon and didn't have that many apps installed. But when I installed a prerooted 2.2 ROM and added A2SD, that problem went away.

So far the Desire has been the only device I've used that has storage issues, I had way more apps installed on my Motorolas and also my LG still has plenty as well. Perhaps HTC needs a lesson on how to partition /data since everyone else seems to do it right.

Mostly, but I cannot completely agree because with no sense, I really see the difference performance wise. The overhead was quite a lot for me.
 
No, I meant that Sense roms are mostly similar to each other, and AOSP ones are mostly similar to each other.

A decent HTC-based ROM without too much modification works fine though.

So after some forum reading (including your posts) I concluded that:
a) using a no-sense rom will give my Desire a performance boost
b) with a rooted device I will be able to move "everything" on my SD or uninstall whatever I want. (right?). Better management of my device in general.
c) you suggest Modaco rom as a sense rooted device, but there is a debate for the distribution and actual features
d) AOSP/Defrost seems the better choice for rooting in general, which is not Sense based (?)
e) There is not any serious difference on features between stock and 3rd party roms. Installing roms has a risk that features won't work as intended (this is my conclusion after reading some developers forums about their roms)

I was reading about a stock froyo with root privileges the other day. Is there any tested version that you can suggest for my Desire? And what do they mean stock? An HTC OTA froyo version... with root permissions?

And a final question concerning those developed ROMs. Will I have any issues while using features that are working perfectly on my stock froyo Desire? I mean like 720p, or using applications in general.

I would say:

a) Possibly, but it may also be more unstable and hardware may not always work as expected.
b) Yes, if your ROM supports it.
c) It's one option, I would not say the best.
d) No. Any ROM can be run when rooted.
e) It varies.

Stock means the HTC ROM, rooted stock is the HTC ROM modified to give root.

Anything that works in stock should work in a custom ROM, unless the dev has done something to break it.
 
So do I have any other option to solve the internal memory space issue? I don't want to risk with a ROM and have problems with performance and stability.

Does stock htc ROM with root mean same stability as stock htc (OTA)?
If yes do you have a suggestion for stock htc with root?
 
If you have read my first post, you would know that I already use this method to store my new applications. My problem is that there is a lot of HTC Sense applications that cannot be moved to the SD or many new applications that will be installed on internal memory and can do nothing for this.

An example is the adobe flash player (12.4 mb), FC (4.43 mb) and stuff like that.

I have only 13 mb left in my phone memory and everything is installed on my SD except some htc sense and android apps. The point is to move whatever I want, even the android and "Sense" apps to my SD by rooting my phone? Is this the case or not?
 
You're not going to be able to move Anything "sense" to the Sd card as far as I know. All methods are for thing the user installs. Sense is all part of the rom anyway, so takes up no space.

Unless you are talking about the extra sense widgets that you can download separately?
