Toggle between apps

My last phone, a Droid incredible, had a very easy way to switch back & forth between running apps, but I haven't figured out the best way to do this on my S4, other than long press of Home button.
What am I missing?

Long-press home, press the app you want to switch to.

I changed it to single click on the home button. Although now that I think about it, it may be a function of my Nova launcher that allows me to do that.
