toggle help.... diff between data or 3g?

I'm pretty new to smartphones and would love it if someone could clarify for me what the difference is between turning off or on the data toggle versus turning off or on the 3g toggle. I currently use widgetsoid and have the data turned to off, however it seems I still have full access to my internet on my phone. so what exactly is this data toggle turning off and should I be turning off the 3g toggle instead? how can I tell if either of the toggles are making my phone usability different? I've gone through other similar threads and no 1 really actually explains what this data toggle is doing for me and will how it is different than the 3g toggle

I use the data toggle, it seems to turn data off completely, so no data is synced period.

I believe the 3G toggle just turns off 3G, and if you have 2G service (ie EDGE / gprs on GSM) it would still sync via the slower 2G speeds.

Depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you want to disable just 3G to save battery then toggle 3G off. If you want (cellular) data completely off then toggle data off.

Do you have WiFi on and are you connected to WiFi?

how can I tell if either of the toggles are making my phone usability different?
Use the phone and see if there is any difference.

I do not have wifi...and what data exactly does the data one turn off because I still have full use of internet? the only difference I've noticed with it turned off so far is that I cannot use the talking feature on my android keyboard.... I don't have any accounts synching to my phone or anything set to update automatically so what would be the difference between that and having the data turned off? sorry prolly a dumb question to most but I am smart phones stupid!

Just to clarify - in my Android 2.3, there are two data toggles:

-mobile data - this turns off all 3G / 2G data, so only phone / text messages work.

-data sync - this turns off all push / pull email / social network services, background data. At this point, your data usage is completely on demand, but you don't get push email, automatic contacts reconciliation and stuff like that. Twitter and newsreaders don't poll and pull out data on the background at intervals. Neither will weather apps pull data from the web on the background. Your data use is completely on your will.

I don't use data sync, I use mobile data toggle far more often. If / when I want data, I turn on mobile data, and let background services sync my email / facebook / calendar, etc. I can also browse the web.

I can't think of a situation where I'd want to use data sync toggle rather than mobile data. Mobile data does everything I need to control my phone usage, but your situation may vary.
