Help Touch screen responsiveness

I got my Eris in March 2010 and lately I've been noticing that the soft keys at the bottom (home, menu, back, search) have to be touched multiple times, on occasion, in order for it to register. Anyone else have this problem? Is my screen "wearing out"?

What I do is touch slightly above the logo, and then it usually responds. But I've also had the sensitive spots change places depending on what ROM I'm on.

Mine used to do that when I first got it--had to press right above the "button". Changes every new handset I get though, I'm on my fourth one so far. :P

Also, do you have callouses on the sides of your thumbs? I know I do most of my phone navigating with the sides of my thumbs, where I have callouses...something about that type of scarred skin doesn't communicate with the screens, I think.
If I make the conscious effort to press it with the fingerprint of my thumb it works.

Random, I know.

Sometimes the most used screen contact areas will seem to deaden after a lot of use, those soft keys in particular, but it's more common for those particular spots to be that way right out of the box.

You have to decide if you can put up with it, or if you want to do as mentioned in another post: root and install another ROM, which can sometimes change the way the screen responds. I noticed that going from 2.1 ROMs to Froyo ROMs.
