Help Touch Screen Unresponsive

cnjondle

Lurker
I have had my EVO 4G LTE since launch day and I absolutely love it. Yesterday while playing Draw Something my touch screen became unresponsive. About halfway up the screen and a half inch in width running across the whole screen is an area that I cannot draw on, a dead area. I tried other drawing apps and even used the *#*#3424#*#* code to do the line drawing test. Every one had pretty much the same result. Then did a factory reset after calling HTC and the problem still persisted. After the factory reset I removed the case and screen protector and cleaned around the screen really well. That seemed to help a bit, but there is still a dead area of the touch screen. I am wondering if anyone else has come across this problem and if so is there anything I can do without having to send it in to HTC for warranty repairs? Also I just did the factory reset from the storage settings option is there another, better factory reset I should try?

Thanks for all the help.

The only deeper reset causes your phone to need repartioning (reactivation on Sprint). In the days of the earlier HTCs, we would sometimes trust the reset from the low-level bootloader menu more, but those days are pretty much behind us in my opinion.

One thing that a data reset won't do is fix stuck transistors (such an error state does happen). For that, a battery pull helps. With this phone, you get the same thing by holding down your power button for a good 10 seconds.

Ok, to try it a few times, ok to try it and leave it off for an hour afterwards.

If that doesn't do it, it's warranty time, sorry.

Hope this helps! :)

Welcome CN, great job troubleshooting! You are ahead of the curve. You've tried just about all the good things to try. It sure sounds like a hardware failure at this point.

Give EarlyMon and Marc's thoughts a go. You could also try Safe Mode (boot to the white HTC boot screen then hold Vol. down until full start up), but at this point it is probably moot.

If you purchased from Sprint, bring it to a corp. store and see if they can help you in any way. You may get lucky and find an associate that is willing to be flexible with your situation. ;)

Have you had any power problems with the phone (do you use the provided power cord)? Has the phone been dropped or taken a knock to the side? Any overheating problems? Does the screen/glass sit flush within the bezel edges?

---edit---
I ran across this post in the One X forums and thought of your problem. Any chance your screen protector was of the 'wet apply' variety? Or possibly there was some other exposure to prolonged humidity/moisture?
