Help Touchscreen stops responding

Hello. I am having some issues with my HTC Desire. Recently, the touchscreen has been locking up randomly during normal use. Today it locked up as soon as I picked up the phone to unlock it, yesterday it locked up when i plugged it in to a computer, the day before it was while playing a game called X Construction Lite and 2 days before it was while playing Andor's Trail. When it happens, the touchscreen becomes completely unresponsive for about 5 minutes, then it goes back to normal. I'm not sure if it's a hardware issue or a software issue, but I'm a bit reluctant to install a different rom to test if it's software related. My phone is not rooted and is running the stock HTC rom, Android 2.2, Kernel 2.6.32.15-gf5a401c htckernel@and18-2 #1, Build Number 2.29.405.5 CL293415 release-keys. Thanks in advance

EDIT: Just wanted to add some extra information in case one of these has known problems, currently running services are com.mwebster.iemail SyncManager, com.metago.astro CopyService, com.latedroid.juiceplotter CollectService, com.youlu Youlu Address Book and Youlu Message, com.splunchy.android.alarmclock NotifyingService, com.google.process.gapps Google Message Service, com.htc.bgp ObexService, com.android.vending AlarmService and com.htc.android.htcime Touch Inpu. Mobile internet is off, Wi-fi is on, GPS is off, using 2 exchange activsync accounts that are both set to Push (Automatic)

I had a similar problem with my desire. Initially was infrequent, but gradually got worse. I eventually removed all apps to check it wasn't caused by one of those, but it made no difference. Also rooted the phone and tried a new rom, but still had the same problem. Sent phone to be repaired in Nov, got it back just before xmas, but problem was now worse! Took it back again after xmas for second repair and have just got the phone back. So far it has behaved perfectly.

I suggest you remove all your apps and see if you still have the problem, if so send it off for repair. If problem disappears it was probably caused by one of your apps. Try reinstalling one by one to see if you can identify the one causing the problem.

Note: i finally fixed this by powering down with the keyboard and power button. This did the trick as opposed to taking out the battery. :D
