Help Transfer from iphone to GS4(Android) messaging problem

OK, so here's the deal... My fiance was on AT&T network with an iphone. We added her onto my Verizon account and got he a GS4 and transfered her old phone number to that phone. Everything works fine with one exception. She doesn't get msgs from people sending her texts from an iphone... it shows as the other person sending an "imessage" to her number on their end. We have been told multiple times by different sales/tech associates that it has to do with her number still bing linked to her apple account somehow. She has tried numerous things and still cant get this fixed. I haven't trid yet due to the fact that I know absolutely NOTHING about apple systems and/or products(I am a staunch apple hater). Is there anyone out there that can shed some light on this issue and help us out? Thanks!!

1) If she still has the iPhone, connect to WiFi, go into the settings and turn off iMessage.
2) Have her log into her apple account online and doublecheck that iMessage has been removed.
3) Delete the phone number from the account.

Optional:
4) Delete the iPhone from the account (unless being used as an iPod now).
5) Log into iCloud and delete the phone from there (unless being used as an iPod).

Outside of this, some say it will take up to 6 months for iMessage to "disconnect" on it's own and stop stealing SMS/MMS messages.
