Transfering pictures from a camera, Possible?

I know other threads have touched on related issues but I wanted to bring it together. thinking for buying an N7 for my parents. They travel a lot and I though it would be easier than their laptop on some occasions.
One of the reasons to have a laptop on holiday is to backup/View/edit/ upload photos. So will this be possible at all the the N7 without a PC. They have a fairly standard Panasonic Lumia point and shoot. No Wifi or bluetooth.

It appears that usb memory sticks are out so that suggests sd card readers would not work either so at this point the only options I can see are:

1) connect the camera to the N7 with a usb cable. Doubt this will work
2) swap SD card in camera for a micro SD card with adaptor then put micro SD card in phone and BT photos to N7. too much hassle and too complicated for parents.
3) assume that the N7 will drag down prices in the whole 7inch tablet market and hold out for a similar device with an SD slot.

To me this is what keeps the Nexus 7 from being a real tool and just a toy. I could handle no SD Card slot if there was an adapter I could use (a la Apple). However, the idea of having to use an OTG cable, plus a USB SD Card reader plus rooting your phone to maybe get it to work? That is just too much.

One of the biggest use cases for a tablet is travelling.I don't need to lug a laptop around with me if I am not travelling for work. I just need web access and the ability to transfer pictures and videos.

I don't believe that Google gimped it to hit price points. I think Google gimped it to not piss off Samsung, HTC, et al.

IMHO, unless you have a good data plan this is not the travelers tablet. I doubt it will drag down too many prices because that would put the manufacturers in the red. Plus the prices for 7" tablets are very competitive as it is... Drop another 50 - 70$ and you get an SD card slot on something like the tab 2...

Your could always put together an arduino based gadget :-). They have bluetooth modules, NFC shields and sdcard shields that can talk to the arduino. Probably wouldn't cost much more than the Nexus by the time you got through :-).

I assume you mean because it does not have a cellular radio so you would have to tether it to your phone. Actually the EU has forced down roaming prices a lot of late on this side if the pond. But to be honest I was more thinking hotels and wifi hot spots as the use case for my original post.

You could upload photos to Drive or dropbox and bring them down to the tablet? Am I reading this correctly; the usb socket is for charging only? Not transferring content?

I cannot imagine using any tablet for pic backups. To be safe, you should load them to two places such as your hard drive, an external drive, or DVDs. I cannot count the times I see people posting questions on if/how they can recover missing vacation pictures because of a drive failure, card failure, etc. Nobody ever thinks that they will be the one to have problems. If you happen to shoot RAW then a tablet is probably not enough space.

Out of pure silly curiosity, I looked at this some more, and it might be cheaper than I originally thought to build such a gadget but I suspect someone will eventually get things to work with the Android USB host stuff (it seems promising to me, anyway) and then the gadget would be pointless.
