Traveling with my sprint phone. Roaming? International?

dont know.. call sprint and ask.. they may have a partner there that can help with better prices.
 
According to Sprint's site, it's $2.29 a minute, or $1.99 a minute if you add a monthly international calling plan.

Data pricing only makes mention of GSM services, and that's about $10 a megabyte. There might not be any CDMA data down there.

My advice: Go Wi-Fi only if you can find it, or just enjoy a phone-free vacation, at those prices.

what he said. Or, think about getting an international phone (i.e. EVO Design, Photon) and using a prepaid/temporary sim card while out of the US.
 
My suggestion is buy a cheap unlocked gsm phone here in the states. When you get to the area you are traveling, buy a sim card for the phone and use that. The prices for data and voice roaming can kill your wallet.
 
I used a Blackberry Bold in September and all you need to do with the world class phones is call Sprint. They will send you a card for the phone.
Then when in Europe phone calls vary from Country to Country but the real GREAT part of this was unlimited email, BBMessenger, and DATA for 40 dollars per month....prorated.

If you are going to do a lot of calling and talking it might be costly but I shot a travel pictorial of our travels and sent tons of photos and got all my texts and emails for the 20 dollars required for 2 weeks.

As soon as I landed in Japan on the Friday before Christmas I received a text from Sprint saying calls were going to cost $1.99 a minute. Texts would be 50 cents out and 5 cents in.
 
Best option is to get an unlocked GSM phone to use internationally. Your phone rates will be much more favorable.

Another option is getting the iPhone 4S. As much as I hate Apple products - this phone is dual CDMA/GSM capable. You need to get Sprint to unlock your GSM though to use it internationally.
 
If you want to take your EVO 4G outside of the States, then make sure it is in Airplane mode the whole time. You can toggle WiFi on/off when in range, but leave Airplane mode on the whole time. No worries of accidental roaming charges. I did this for my trip to Paris with both EVO and Epic 4Gs. Remember, if you want to use Google maps, you can cache them on your phone prior to going offline.

a) do I need to turn off data, as well?

b) I assume it's airplane mode on, data mode off, then simply connect to any wifi from there and you should be safe?

c) If the phone turns off, does it reboot into no data, airplane mode.... or does it default to normal? And if so... what sort of charges will I see for the few seconds to lock it down?

I was in London for a week last year and kept my evo in airplane mode. I incurred no extra charges. Airplane mode disables everything, but I found out that I could still use wifi with it in that mode.

As far as turning it off and back on, test your phone before you leave. I believe it should remember the last state it was in. But to be sure I would put it in airplane mode and restart it before I left just to be sure.
 
Safest bet is setting up a google voice account and forwarding it onto the GSM Flip device you can buy anywhere...

The Photon is world capable but I only use it for wifi while I'm out of North America, it's easier and cheaper just to create a G Voice account and give the important people your number...I just have both on my business card normally so it works out...
 
We're heading to Europe this week and taking our phones with us as we'll need them on the final phase of our trip in Chicago. I do plan on using WIFI while we're over there but want to make sure we don't get charged for roaming. I've heard that if you're over there and receive a call, you can be charged for roaming. Will disabling the cellular radio prevent this?

I think we're going to rent phones when we're there. Someone told me you can use Skype so i may look into this as well :)
 
Europe has no CDMA services. Unless you have one of the few world phones that Sprint sells, your phone will continue to search for service, and come up with nothing.

I would still disable the cellular radio, since your phone will drain battery faster, by continuing to search for a mobile network that it's not going to find.

Use WiFi hotspots whenever you can, and pay only what the hotspot provider charges for service. Hopefully, Europe has as many free spots as we have in the USA.

Just got back from 10 days in Canada (Montreal & Quebec). We turned off Cellular Data before the border on our 3 Sprint iPhones (4S) and used only WiFi. Not a single penny in data charges. That's the way to go. Cellular Data OFF, WiFi ON.
