I am going to be traveling out of the country and want to be 100% certain that I am not using any data while in roaming mode.

Has anyone else done the same thing and can you verify that un-checking the "Data roaming" setting prevents it from using any data on the "foreign" network?

Where are you going with CDMA 800/1900? Basically only NA some of the carribean (and I guess Iraq).
 
Traveling to Canada. Prefer to not use airplane mode because at points I will be close to the US border and may be able to pick up a VZW signal.

Can I ask where in Canada, close to the U.S.? I just went this past weekend to a place called Niagara-on-the-lake that's a few miles north of the falls. I shut off the mobile side and had NO problem with shutting off the mobile button (on the stock Tbolt). I did turn it on once real quick and then shut it off and I already have a .002 cent charge applying to my account, but that's it. If you have the nationwide talk and text, I believe you'll also get the ability to send and receive MMS messages at no charge. I could be wrong on the last part though.

P.S. Don't use WiFi if you can. At least not on a public network. You WILL get spammed, you know this maaaaaaan.
 
Thanks for the info. My question was about disabling roaming data. I need to leave the phone portion on because I will be texting. (Free even in Canada on my plan)
 
There should be an option under wireless and networks in settings to disable roaming data or international data. I haven't been on sense in a long time so i may be mistaken, but it is there on my phone.

Thanks, I did find it and have disabled it.

Now what I really would love is for someone to confirm that it actually does prevent data while roaming and therefore I won't get charged. :D

I would call Customer Service. IIRC, they should be able to disable roaming for your phone on their side as well.

It does. I had the data roaming box unchecked (and still do) with the exception of one time, to see what it would do. Hence the .002 cent charge.

Just got back from a trip to Canada with my TB. Under settings, wireless & network, I unchecked "mobile network". In addition, under "mobile networks" item, I unchecked "data roaming". Had no data charges except a few kB everytime I restarted the phone. Mostly used texting - free under my plan. No phone calls since they would have been $0.69/min. Used wifi at hotel and conference center when I could. Also used public wifi in a couple of places - no spam noted - YMMV.
