This might be a way to root without over riding recovery depending on whats in the rooting options #2 cause i dont know adb codes and stuff like that, preform nandroid backups and make odin flashable tars. It hasn't been updated in a while but i think the main functions work. Nevermind i found the xda support thread its been updated recently. All credits to the developers who put their time and effort into this project.

Bump anyone ever use android toolkit in above link. i dont have my computer to try it yet. Im hoping to have it by the 3rd or 4th. If it makes odin flashable tars im all in. In the basic toolkit for all devices and not the regular toolkit i think the code to root is

->adb push su /data/local/tmp

I think you need a copy of su somewhere on your pc or phone i dont know ive never done it. Theres probably other codes as well to do it and push supersu or superuser to system and i dont think it trips knox.

How to make insecure boot image another way to get root access. If you make this be sure to make a copy of your original boot image incase you want to flash back to secure boot image.

Make insecure kernels, make a copy of your original kernel incase you go back to stock.

Manually rooting steps and place to download su binary, busybox, and superuser. Its same as what can be used here except if you dont want super user rename it supersu.apk and have a copy of supersu apk looks like manually rooting this phone is the only way to save the recovery if want over the air updates. Might get lucky pulling a tar with this toolkit but i think you need a insecure boot image to that. And i dont think they ever patched adb exploits. If you buy the professional version of the unified toolkit you can root any build. I dont think this phone is a lost cause.

Project Save The Recovery

And now to find a way to get tether for base band.... No way to crack msl yet??

Not that i know of as of yet. Im not sure that if wifi tether router works on this phone cause the way it runs the hotspot on multi-line plans. And cracking the msl might be a challenge. If you knew someone or had a friend or something who would be willing to come to virgin mobile and get a data done right phone which is put onto your account you could get free hotspot. If you have a data done right phone you wouldn't have to crack anything or wait on someone to crack it.
Sharing data is easy on this phone since you can buy it with top up cards. You could have whoever is on your line buy their own data. They dont need to buy a $250 phone like this galaxy s3 or the $500 galaxy s5 theres ones for $100 on data done right. Im not sure what wifi hotspot method is used for the regular Tri-Band is.

Factory resetting this phone make it program itself all over again through the virgin mobile account app just found that out. And reactivation lock enabled will cause a known R/L error in odin which prevents you from flashing anything.

Not sure about Virgin but with Boost you can just call them and ask for your MSL and they'll give it to you. They don't even ask why. It might be worth a try.

Do they offer a way to pay for the hotspot feature. Depending on what your using your data for on the hotspot it might be worth the money to just pay for it. On this data done right phone if you get a single plan they removed the whole hotspot feature from the phone and cant be activated at all unless you get 2 lines or more. Eventually if they keep tightening their security on things like network related stuff there may not be a way to get free hotspot unless you have a subscription. Thats totally up to the carrier. It would be unfair to the people who spend cash on it to let free hotspots work. Since all 3 phones have the same baseband its possible all carriers applied the same patch cause sprint. There may not be a way to get hotspot working with out a subscription.

Virgin mobile does offer this for hotspot its only $50 might be something to look into and i think you can get them at Best Buy and Wal-Mart or online. Different carriers may have different hotspot devices.

Boost mobile offers this hotspot for $50 as well.

Virgin mobiles wifi hotspot plans for on the phone are in the account section online.

Its always cheaper to just get home wifi and internet theses devices are mainly for if your on the road traveling or something.

I think if you flash a rom on this data done right phone and wiped the system and data just like you would in a factory reset data wiping it will not connect you to the network cause of the missing account app not in the system even if you try applying a apn fix. And the way it programs itself after each factory reset i bet you need a stock rom in order to use it correctly. Im not testing it cause i dont want to screw my lines up. Im happy with stock cause theres a insecure boot image and insecure kernel which i can make for it. Chainfire made a tool which helps make insecure kernels so you get adb root access
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2593581

Or you can download adbd insecure app of chainfires from google play and run it that way.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.adbd

I prefer to build it a kernel that is then give it some other tweaks like selinux permissive and stuff like that.

Just got beside a sprint tower and went 64.75 mb a second download. Went for a little drive to see how fast it goes beside a tower or close to it.

Not if your running it for adb. The only reason its outdated for the galaxy s3 is cause no one with the new firmware has come forward and said hey here it is but you dont need that new build to root not if you donate/buy the professional version and you can root any build. Its quite useful if you know how to use it. I cant use odin cause once i do my over the air updates are gone without a copy of the stock recovery i have to use this or something else. And its not outdated just some builds never got updated and reason behind it is cause some builds use the same boot image. And you can make a insecure boot image if you have the regular triband cause Samsung releases it. Just pull the boot image and modify it then use it to make your own personal odin flashable tars. Or you can do that on any phone that supports a insecure boot image. And iam sure they figured out how to make zips sideload through stock recovery without signature verification. I mean they figured out how to boot nexus into any recovery without flashing it iam sure they got it figured out.

It's less than useless for the s3. For adb, why not just use SDK?
You said its not outdated just the files are? Thats what I said, all its files for the s3 are outdated. I have the paid version, useless. And yes I know how to use it. I've been a guide here for a while now and I usually test new toolkits to let ppl know how they work. This one has some uses, he just doesn't keep the files updated. Us guides and other staff members are always here to help.
And no you cannot flash unsigned zips in stock recovery, that's why we made custom recoveries. You can temp boot a recovery on a nexus of course, you can do it on any device that uses fastboot.
I've built, and helped build several roms and kernels for this phone, I'm a huge S3 fan.

What one person may find useless another person may find useful. Yeah the files aren't always updated but if you make your own you dont need use the files in the toolkit to make the toolkit work.

If you need your stock recovery, you can pull it using adb. Then you can at least root.
And you cannot use a toolkit to create a full firmware .tar. Why do you think ppl wait for Samsung to post a full .tar?

You can make a full tar cause you can pull any partition from the phone and compress it into a odin flashable tar. But if your making it for yourself you dont need every partition. Why wait for Samsung to release a full tar when you can make it yourself. To do adb on this phone to pull recovery you need a device specific code to pull it and its no where to be found on the internet.

Of course you can make a tar, I said you can't make a full firmware. Pulling recovery is simple, but I've never seen someone try so hard to argue with a guide here before. I'm tagging out on this one, good luck dude.

It's perfect for beginners. But you can really do the same thing with adb, odin, a pc and twrp. Toolkits can be a helpful shortcut, but manual is best. Toolkits tend to get ppl trying things they are not ready for. Developers usually don't recommend them, I know I try not to. But sometimes they are peoples only chance at saving their phone. Mark is a very smart guy (skip), he just devotes more time to newer devices, and nexus'. That's why I said it's fairly useless for the s3. The resource files are always outdated. For rooting and flashing you are better off getting newer files yourself. Odin makes it so easy.
Rooting with odin and twrp is so simple. This phone isn't likely to get many ota updates other than the occasional security patch (if that). And you can still flash an ota with twrp. You just have to remove the assert.props from the updater script and flash away.

What if you just want a rooted phone without custom recovery. I dont plan on flashing anything on this phone unless i take my kid off my line and get her her own line but thats not smart on my part. Im mainly looking to have a rooted stock for now. If i flash anything through adb its a insecure kernel or boot image so i can get adb root access.
