Root TrickDroid 4.0 - ICS 4.0.4, Sense 4.1

Sigh. I don't want a "Like". I want an "Install from zip" :)

If the banana dog does not get you, nothing will. So this is my last try.

So... I just tried to put JT R14 on my phone (had a spare 15 mins at work)... wouldn't boot! Only got as far as the JT boot screen, so am just restoring IceCold.

Unimpressed... know it prolly isn't down to the ROM (maybe user error)... Will have another look later, when I get home from work!

Sorry about that. You know what they say about two steps go outward and one stop back. R14 looks like those one step back releases. Actually, from the feedback, this one looks more like two steps back.

But that kind of thing is bound to happen from time to time with a ROM like this. Life on the the cutting edge.

I thought it was prolly user error... if the ROM sounds like it has a couple of bugs, I may give it a miss... toying with the idea of CM10 nightlies... only problem being that it's Nightlies... don't know if I can be bothered flashing a new ROM each day/every other day! :)

Hi everyone

Been on this ROM since it first came out and I hate sense but I quite like sense 4...well this version of it at least! Little bit of lag when opening apps after a reboot but it gets quicker with time.

As for the phone dialler thingy, how come you didn't just drag the phone icon from the app drawer and place it on your bottom tool bar? Or are we talking about different problems here

Camera works ok for me but like you or someone else said the battery drain is something I'm getting used to after being on ICS and XGS series for the past don't know how long :)

There's talk of the dev changing the kernel too so that may make a difference.

If it wasn't for XGS garbling up the fonts every so often I'd probably still be on it but Trick Droid is making a nice change.

I was zzzzzzzz.

Which ROM. I think they are all fine ROM's (so basically you are not getting an answer).

It depends on what you want. None are 100% bug free.

Sense 3.6. I personally like Blackout the main reason for this is I like Sense 3.6 best. However Blackout, has "deal breaker" issues IMHO:

  • No VOIP
  • No WiFi hotspot,
  • Poor voice call quality

In my case I do not use VOIP much (and when I have to I can us my Wifes phone) and the WiFi hotpsot, and I find voice quality acceptable.

Objectively, if you are not sold on Sense 3.6, there are better options.

Sense 4. I also revisited Virtuous Infinity last week. I think this one has no "deal breaker" issues except this ROM is the slowest of all DHD ROM's I tried. Sense 4 is Sense 4. It keeps on occasionally reminding you that it may be time to buy a newer phone :)

The scaling issues are still there (original UI was designed for 540 x 960). Some widgets look awkward when resized, full screen weather animations are broken in landscape mode. For the camera you have to disable face detection in the camera. I failed to test HDR and Panorama mode on this ROM.

Nice ROM, but if I like Sense 4 I would go for Sense 4A.

Sense 4A. I think you made a good choice with TrickDroid. If I did not use Peep, I think I would stick with this one.

TrickDroid is has a UI based on Sense 4 A (lite). This results in fixing the scaling issue in VI since the UI comes from a 480 x 800 display. Sense 4 lite runs nicely on our DHD's.

On the other hand, it feels very spartan in some respects. Home screens slide from left to right instead of rotating. You don't get to zoom out and see all your home screens (forgot what you call this). When you press the menu button from the home screen it feels more like GB than ICS. Sense 3.6 still feels faster.

The only issues I have found with TrickDroid so far are the camera issues and the odd non-functioning Barcode scanner, although there may be issues I have no encountered yet.

Oh yeah, I have not been on it long enough to be sure, but it does seem like it consumes a lot of battery power. Decided to restore my Blackout Nandroid and will spend more time on TrickDroid next weekend.

It comes with a lot of very interesting Tweak options. Loading the tweaks is a cumbersome process. Enter recovery and install through a AROMA installer. I don't understand what some of the tweaks are supposed to do.

If you decide you don't like Sense... an interesting project which you can try is to remove Sense via the tweaks.

I would not recommend this a newbie. The install is too difficult if you ask me. But you should manage all this easy enough. I could have flashed 3 ROM's in the time it gets this thing to work well.

AOKP. I am disciple of Sense. You should probably PM Metha23 on this one. I tried two (or was it three) versions of JellyTime (until 8.1). Things are fixed and something something is broken again

The last version I use was fine, with the usual AOKP issues. Camera, video quality and battery life seems to be a tad short of what you get from a Sense based ROM.

I do like JellyTime more than ICS 8.6.1. The notification drawer is the biggest improvement I noticed.

Mehta..... Easy mistake, even I made it once ;-) means teacher....

Looks like I am flooded in today. No way my car can navigate the flooded highway outside my house...

...restoring Nandrdoid back-up :D

The issue I noticed with the ZXing Bar Code scanner was fixed in the October 2 update of the app. XZing disabled exposure control as it was causing bugs on several devices.

One observation. Going from Virtuous Infinity to TrickDroid made this ROM feel fast. Going from Blackout to TrickDroid makes this ROM feel a bit slow.

Update: Looks like it settles down after a few hours of use. The Friend Stream widget keeps on reloading even if there are no updates (Note: It does not auto update in Sense 4).

This is the only other bug I have found:

Whole tweet is not displayed.

This was not fixed by changing the font sizes in settings. The Tweaks app has several font options available. I have not had time to try them.

Hi guys,

Just a quick update on my time with trickdroid. Up until a couple of days ago, it was going pretty well, was running smoothly and no major issues spring to mind, maybe a little slow at times. But all of a sudden, my battery just started disappearing rather quickly, and i think i managed to narrow it down to the wifi. Normally after a days work, i get home with about 75% left, but suddenly, i was getting home with about 20%. Wasn't sure if it was a setting i had changed or not, so i did a master reset, but to no avail.
Having this problem, prompted me to install Jellytime. No issues as yet, is faster and smoother, and all round a better experience IMO.
Whether the trickdroid issue was an isolated problem with mine i don't know, would be nice to hear from others if they are using trickdroid and have encountered any major issues.

Steve.

Thanks for the feedback. I have read feedback of other having issues with sudden unexplained battery drain.

Update: By the way were you able to test the Hotspot function. It is something I do not test since it is not allowed in my carriers data plan.

After five flashes, and testing four versions of tweaks (and downloading 1 GB on a 512kbps connection), installing a good TrickDroid v.3.0.0 install is now:

1.Full Wipe (Reset to Factory/wipe cache/wipe dalvik)
2. Flash ROM
3. Reboot and set-up ROM
4. Return to recovery and flash the Tweaks Package (needed to fix Gallery and Full Screen weather)
5. Select either Sense 4 Lite Lockscreen or Full Sense 4 Loackscreen
6. Reboot

It was a good day.

I made a flashable governor tweaks for the TrickDroid ROM.

TrickDroid v3 uses the ondemand governor by default. This is a good choice, an is the default choice used in the industry.

The flashable zip attached below will enable the smartassV2 governor and tweak some settings. Is it better than ondemand? Well, everyone had their own opinion.

General info:

SmartassV2 "has an 'ideal' frequency which it will quickly ramp up to, then more slowly ramp up once past it, and vice-versa for down-ramping. A separate "ideal" frequency is used when the screen is off." (Source)

Smartass tracks the state of the screen, and when screen is off (a.k.a sleep or suspended in the terms of this governor) a different ideal frequency is used. This is the only difference between the screen on and screen off states. Proper tuning of the awake_ideal_freq and sleep_ideal_freq should allow both high responsiveness when screen is on and utilizing the low frequency range when load is low, especially when screen is off (Source).

Okay, I gave you the info, but you have to decide for yourself.

If you just want to enable smartassV2 you can go to Google Play and install a CPU control app. These apps will allow you to manipulate frequencies and governors.

So why the flashable zip? The apps do not allow me to fine tune governors so I have resorted to editing scripts for my own use.

a) TrickDroidv3-smartassV2-c1.zip (attached below)

What will this file do:

  • Enable smartassV2 as your governor.
  • Adjust max_cpu_load from 55 (default for this ROM) to 85. This means the cpu will ramp up slower.
  • Adjust min_cpu_load from 25 (default for this ROM) to 35. This means the cpu will ramp down a bit faster.
  • Adjust down_rate_us from 99000 to 49000. This means the cpu will ramp downfaster.

These settings are more conservative than default ROM smartassV2 settings and might result in longer battery life. Why might? I have no testers, so I am not sure
b) TrickDroidv3-smartassV2_12GHZ-c1.zip (attached below)

  • Same as the first file expect it changes maximum speed from 1024 MHz to 1200 MHz.

If you enable this I would encourage you to get a controller like No Frills CPU Control (its free from Google Play). It will allow you to test if your phone is stable at 1.2GHz. Apps like No Frills will not apply overclock settings if it detects a sudden reboot.

Using this file has no such safety net.

c) TrickDroidv3-smartassV2_12GHZ-c1.zip (attached below)

  • Ups max speed to 1.5 GHz. Made on request. I have not tested it myself. Should work fine. Just faster than I am willing to run my phone.
DISCLAIMER AND AGREEMENT

IF YOU USE THESE FILES, YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK.

THESE FILES ARE FOR V3.0.0 ONLY.

How to install

1. Copy the .zip file to the root of your SDCard.
2. Reboot into recovery.
3. Flash the .zip
4. Reboot.

Return to Stock - TrickDroid-00start-RTS.zip

Want to go back to stock. Just flash the TrickDroid-00start-RTS.zip below. Flash this file and your back to the ondemand governor. This file does not enable on demand. It just restores the default /etc/init.d/00start file.

Thanks to torxx for allowing me to do this, and something else... oh yes for the ROM and Tweak Package
I learned to edit system files thanks to LeeDroid's tutorials.
I learned to make flashable zips studying mike1986's flashable zips for ARHD.

Bug list as far as I can tell (done with my test, maybe others users can report some more?)

1. Camera is buggy:

  • HDR - Not working
  • Panorama - Not working
  • Autofocus - Not so good

2. Headset buttons don't work.

3. SDCard takes a long time to mount on boot or when unmounted (plugged to a PC).

TrickDroid v4.0 is out. This one features Sense 4.1. First Sense 4.1 ROM for the DHD.

With this release this ROM moves from a One V base, to a Desire X base.

The tweaks package is not updated yet, so don't expect everything there to work. The wake on volume keys won't work with the new ROM.

Bugs... One big one. Google contacts are not syncing. So,if you keep your contacts on Google Contacts/GMail this would be a deal breaker.

Other bugs are minor when resizing widgets, resizing arrows are out of bounds on the left and right borders for widgets 4 wide. The bottom arrow can also appear over the dock for widgets occupying the lowest layer.

The bottom arrow issue can be worked around by resizing form the top and moving the widget.

Camera works well enough. Face Detection works. HDR and Panorama do not,but it was discussed before that this is a hardware limitation which the Dev may not be able to fix. Overall, looks like the Desire X ROM is a good match and the camera works better than 3.0. Was surprised to see HD video. If I am .or mistaken, the Desire X has no HD video

Rosie performance is acceptable, but I would not call it fast. The Desire X does have a dual core processor and 768 MB of RAM, so maybe Sense 4.1 pushed the DHD to its limits.

All in all, once the contacts bug is fixed, it looks like the best choice for someone who wants a Full Sense 4 ROM. It feels faster than Sense 4 on Virtuous Affinity and that ROM is clocked to run faster than TrickDroid 4.0 by 20%.

For me, I would prefer a faster Sense 3.6 ROM or maybe even an AOSP ROM. But if you want Sense 4, Sense 4.1 is the might be the way to go.

A lot of the bugs you report wouldn't bug me (camera not working being the best example), but this would be a deal breaker for me. Perhaps Sense 4.1 is a little too much for the DHD, as you say too!

Some other users report performance as "buttery", but I guess that might depend on how many widgets one uses (and part of me thinks the Sense 4 crowd has gotten used to laggy :D) . I love the effort torxx puts on his ROM's, and hopefully he can squeeze out more performance from the ROM.

There is a major bug that has to be fixed, which I would think would be fairly easy to do. I am not sure about performance. Even with more performance, I don't know. Sense 4 Lite feels a fair bit slower than Sense 3.6, and Sense 3.6 is slower than AOSP/AOKP in general.

Anyway, am posting this reply from aospX 1.0.0-MR1.

Errata: Apparently this is a Sense 4.1 Lite ROM. I am not sure how Sense 4.1 Lite differs from Full Sense 4.1.

Sense 4.1 Lite had a Rosie and the ability to add or reduce the number of home screens.

Update: The optimization patch is what has been causing issues with Google Contacts sync and it is now removed from the install process. This used to be a separate file.

I think the optimization patch was integrated into the later version of the Tweaks Package. It is optional so it is recommended not to install the optimization patch in Tweaks.

A 2-day Beta test could have sorted out most of this issues. With everyone reporting with different installs (no optimization, optimization from script, and two versions of the Tweak Package) the feedback and advice you will see on XDA is confusing.

In any event, a revised version will be underway in less than a week. So I advice just holding off till the next release, version 4.1.0 or 5.0.

With the release of Team Venom's ViperDHD this ROM is officially discontinued.

Torxx, the developer of this ROM is a member of Team Venom. The new ROM went on a beta test last week so it is daily driver ready at release.
