Root Trouble Downgrading to 2.3.3

I'm having a lot of problems downgrading from 2.3.4 to 2.3.3 to root my Incredible 2. First, I have a MacBook Pro and I initially tried the stickied downgrade guide in Boot Camp (Windows) but was having issues. Then I saw that I could get the SDK/adb/fastboot set up in Mac OS X - so I did that.

It went much smoother here than in Windows, but I get stuck at this one spot. When I enter this command:

Code:
adb shell /data/local/tmp/sh -c '/data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 2.18.605.3'

I get:

Code:
Patching and backing up partition 17...
Error opening backup file.

I tried ignoring that and continuing with the rest of the commands but that ultimately results in another error when trying to flash:

Code:
FAILED (remote: 43 main version check fail)

And I'm still on 2.3.4. I turned off my antivirus (Symantec Auto-Protect), iTunes is not running (or any other apps except Safari and of course Terminal), and I've done everything I can think of. I'm kind of losing my mind here.
