Root Trouble Rooting - "firmware too new?"

Hi there,

I'm helping a friend root her incredible. I did mine back before the 2.2 OTA, and it seems things have changed a little.

I have a mac - downloaded unrevoked3 and ran it - and I keep getting a message at the end "failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?"

any idea what might be up?

the phone reboots once, i see H-boot, then it boots up normally. It never gets into recovery mode.

Yes, USB debugging is on.

Thanks!

Huh... I waited a while, read some stuff, double checked I'd changed all the things I was supposed to then tried again. Now apparently it works.

I guess it just didn't like the wallpaper I had. It changed it during the first attempt.

what did you change? i followed all the directions from Updated: Root the HTC Droid Incredible - Technology - Jonamerica.com

... pretty much boot it up, plug it in, usb debugging on, click "go" on the unrevoked tool.

what's this about a wallpaper you had to change?

and it's the most current version of unrevoked i'm using.

I had the same problem today, just made sure everything was perfect. Tried it again and worked no problem. Also make sure the usb drivers are installed. the one problem i was having was getting into abd if u dl the new r08 sdk you have to use <SDK> \platform-tool\ not <SDK>\tools hope it works out

Has anyone gotten this working with 2.3.4, baseband 2.15.10.07.07, build number 4.06.605.3 with S-On? I have uninstalled just about every app on the phone and still keep getting this error.

The instructions for rooting 2.3.4 are stickied at the top of the forum, completely different process.

edit: i see you already posted there, I'd recommend trying the version of unrevoked that is linked in the thread rather than dealing with zergRush.

I posted this in the other forum too:
The problem was fixed after I ran the latest RUU for the incredible(RUU_Incredible_C_Gingerbread_S_VERIZON_WWE_4.08.605.2_Radio_2.15.10.07.07_NV_1.70_release_222194_signed.exe). This upgraded my phone to the latest verizon build. Then follow the instructions from this thread again and every step worked successfully.

I was previously not able to do a factory reset with 4.06.605.3, I would select factory reset and the phone would reboot but it didn't actually reset anything. I believe 4.06.605.3 is a buggy release from HTC/Verizon, but I could never get the update and install properly. It would download but not install.

Anyway, I running Cyanogen 7.1. Thanks for this great guide. You guys are awesome.
