Help Trouble upgrading firmware

Hi there,
I just bought my SG2 GT-I9100 a few days ago and and am very happy with it so far.

I've installed Kies on my laptop (Vista) and it says that my current firmware is:
PDA:KF3 / PHONE:KE7 / CSC:KF1 (NEE)
and that this is available:
PDA:KI8 / PHONE:KI4 / CSC:KI2 (NEE)

I have no idea what all those codes mean, but I figured I should always keep my phone updated (maybe I'm wrong there), so I tried to perform the upgrade. However, a little while into the download, a green android appears on the phone screen with this text: "Downloading - Do not turn off target" and Kies comes up with an error message saying that I have to take out the battery of the phone, restart and try again - which I then did. This has now happened three or four times with the same result.

Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong? I've searched the forum for a solution, but couldn't find a thread with the same issue. I may be blind, though...

Any help much appreciated.
 
Same issue here when trying to upgrade on Vista. Kept on throwing errors until I decided to try upgrading on a Win7 machine. The upgrade went smoothly after that. Maybe try getting someone to let you use their Win7 computer?

My work computer runs Win7 so I could just try that, I guess. Thanks for the tip.

What happens with the install? Is it going to erase all the data/apps etc. on the phone? I have done a backup just for safety's sake.

No problem! The only thing I have heard from some people regarding missing data is that after upgrading to 2.3.4 the Memo app may have some problems keeping pre-upgrade memos. Also the widget has some issues until you re-add it. So just some things to keep in mind. Other than that everything else should remain the same

Thanks. So this is an upgrade to 2.3.4? How do you see that? It's just a bunch of meaningless letters and numbers to me.

I finally had time to try the update on my Win7 laptop - and it worked fine. Everything seems to be there. Thanks for helping out. :)
 
Hey. I've had my S2 for ten days now and I am also unable to update the firmware. I am running Windows 7 64bit and my laptop is pretty powerful too.
When I try and start the update in Kies I get a Windows error, and then have to close down the program via the task manager as it won't respond any other way. I tried the Odin method too but that just resulted in an error too. I'm afraid to repeat it in case I mess up my phone.

Apart from the usual S2 problems (battery, overheating) the handset is perfectly fine, and I am clueless as to why I am unable to upgrade.

I am with Three UK.
 
Trust me, you don't want the official 2.3.4 upgrade. It messed up my display BIG time.

I flashed a leaked 2.3.5 'official' ROM and now things are much better.

Don't have the Kies error issues, mine just says the current 2.3.3 etc firmware is up to date, but everything else is the same: Battery drains quicker than what others claim, device gets hot and Phone supplied by Three here in the UK. Baldilocks has commented on a few topics, mine included, stating that they/i should root the Phone and get the updates without the need of Kies - something i plan to look into and do tomorrow - but if you've tried the Odin method (which is the only one i am vaguely aware of) then i cannot offer any other suggestions or advice.
