Root Trouble with boot looping (again)

Hullo all,

After borking my first attempt to get CM running on my phone, I managed to recover the device back to stock ROM. When I tried the process again, I made the mistake of trying to flash CM9 without downgrading my hboot first. Now I can't flash anything successfully, and for some reason the stock RUU won't download for me. I've tried several times but it's always incomplete. Can anyone help me get back to stock (or even better, through to CM9)? My understanding is if I can just get the Virgin Mobile RUU, I should be able to get back to stable running. Once I have that I should be able to downgrade hboot and get into CM9.

HTC EVO V 4G
S-OFF
HBOOT 1.57.5757 (juopunutbear)
JMZ's Odex ROM

Thanks

Did you make a backup? Can you get into recovery? If so go into recovery and restore your nandroid backup. You can still downgrade your hboot, if you can access the bootloader and assuming you have a way of getting the .zip on your sd card (spare phone, or through recovery). If so I would try downgrading then see if it will boot.

When I tried downgrading to hboot 1.04, I first got a CID Incorrect error. From what I could find, the entry 'SPCS_001' in the android-info.txt file should be changed to 'SPCS_002' for Virgin Mobile phones. I tried running changing it to that, rezipping it and flashing it, but hboot only gets as far as 'parsing' before it goes back to the regular hboot screen. It doesn't finish the update, still version 1.57.5757.

Did you use the hboot from the link above? If so you shouldn't have to change anything. Just make sure it's name is PG86IMG.ZIP and it is on the root of the sd card.

Alright, maybe I just had a bad download the first time. It worked fine this time, thanks. I was in bootloader not recovery, sorry about the phrasing.

I still can't boot though. It pauses at the white htc screen then the screen goes black (not off, black). I've heard conflicting answers on whether TWRP works though, so I think that might be the problem.

Edit: Now with CMW Recovery and CM9, it gets as far as the CM9 animation, but just hangs there. I know the first boot is supposed to take longer, but I left it for 10-15 minutes and it was still on the animation screen.

Good! Restore your backup and install 4ext. Which cm rom are you installing? It might need a kernel flashed with it

Restored from backup, now it just hangs at the white htc screen. I used this backup the last time to get my phone back, so it should be good.

I used to try to flash cm9 before we even knew hboot was the issue and I reinstalled backups all the time so I'm not sure what the problem is. Since your downgraded, try the cm rom again(which one is it by the way?) and if that and your backup don't work you can try to push a new rom through adb or run the ruu

It's cm-9-20120826. I've tried flashing it three times and it still won't boot. I'll try pushing it with adb.

Edit: That didn't work either. Starting to get a little worried now that nothing is getting past the white htc screen. Trying the backup again.

Where did that rom come from? It might need a kernel

It was from a link to an androidfiles directory. I can't find the post I got it form now, but I didn't see anything for kernels. Also, it's not just this ROM; the others I've tried won't boot past the white htc screen anymore either.

Thanks! That booted fine and it's running stable. I'm glad I have a phone again, especially on such a nice ROM. Thanks again for you help phw8558. I'm still not sure where I went wrong, or if it's actually fixed, but as long as this ROM keep working, I'm more than happy.
