Root Trouble with Nandroid restore after CM9 test

U98773

Lurker
I've used Nandroid backup/restore function innumerable times for testing and restoration. On my regular CM7 system (G2) I wanted to test a CM9 rom, so I made my usual nandroid backup. I flashed cm9, saw what I wanted to see, and have been trying to restore back fully to cm7. The nandroid restore process seems to run fine. But after rebooting, I'm only partially restored. Some of my apps are present, some aren't. The desktop is back to the default, and I'm prompted with the original HTC Vision sign-in sequence. Before I start manually screwing around to get back to "normal," I'm hoping to find a way to get the full nandroid restore to work. I've tried a couple of times, both with and without data wipe/factory restores in-between. Notable issue: When the phone boots, I see various force closes from some programs I'd previously installed (e.g. Swype). It seems as if the phone isn't really getting properly cleared before the restore, or nandroid is otherwise confused. Any clues appreciated! Thanks.

U98773,

Firstly, welcome to the AndroidForums!

Take my reply with a big grain (or bag, LOL) of salt here, since I don't have your device and am not familiar at all with the ROMs you are using.

But...your issue sounds very similar and familiar to me from what I remember folks reporting back in the old Eris days when the cache2cache memory saving technique was being used (that particular root method not necessarily being relevant in this case, just some context and background).

Anyway, the end-result was that folks found that they needed to do some wipes prior to restoring their Nandroid backups--a practice that had never been needed before and I'm sure is not widely done (heck, I just restored a Nandroid on my GNex a few hours ago and I did not do any wipes before).

So, you might try doing various wipes of things like dalvik-cache (that really came to my mind when I saw you said you were getting FCs), etc. and then re-doing your Nandroid restore.

Good luck and hope you figure-out your issue.

Cheers!

I'm on ClockworkMod 3.0.2.4. I was never able to make later versions work properly with CM7. I've bumped up to an alpha ICS for now, still with the same 3.0.2.4. I've done a Nandroid backup since then but haven't tried a restore. I'd like to get to a newer ClockworkMod if it can be done without a repeat of the earlier hassles. Thanks.

I seem to remember reading somewhere on xda that there were issues with earlier versions of cwm on ics. My suggestion would be to download a different ROM, something gb, copy it to the sd card, boot to recovery and flash it, then dl rom manager off market and just restore your backup. Kinda messy, I know, but I'm guessing you'll have more success flashing a rom that cwm will cooperate with first.

Since I'm running an ICS (alpha) now I decided to take a chance and let Rom Manager bump me up to CWM 5.0.2.7. All seems OK! Thanks.
