After re-reading this thread, I was struck by how much things have changed since it started.
Here's the answer I'd give to the Optimus vs. Intercept question today.
The screen on both these phone is too small for web browsing on non-mobile web sites. The screen is marginal for mobile sites. You need a 4" screen as a minimum. If you want an inexpensive smart phone to check the weather, check mail, and do a few other things, pick whichever of these two has the best price you can find. But don't fool yourself that you're getting a replacement for a laptop. Neither phone is adequate for serious composing, web browsing, or even complex games. Reading a book on either one of these? Painful! It's unlikely either will be upgraded to 4.0 (ICS).
OTOH, if you have a 10" tablet, either will make a nice phone to carry around for when you need to make a call, text, check mail, or use maps.
