Root Trying to flash Serendipity 6.3...

cwikert

Newbie
I've never flashed a rom before. I currently have stock froyo with the paragon kernel i flashed using the app sgs kernel flasher. I have clockwork mod rom manager, I created a backup of my current rom. So then I tried installing the serendipity rom from the sd card but i get an error message. I read on xda you need to use ODIN and flash back to stock 2.1 then do a master wipe and re root it and stuff.

[GUIDE] How to Install a custom ROM - xda-developers

Their link to download ODIN is broken so I don't know how to get it. And is there really no other way to flash it besides doing a master wipe and using ODIN?

No, it is best to go back to stock with a master clear.

Recommended:
  1. Backup all of your apps, photos, etc. Use Titanium Backup (on the market) for your apps. Put the backup files on your computer.
  2. Using Odin, flash back to stock JF6. If your phone has 3-button problems use this Odin.
  3. Using Odin, Master Clear THIS DELETES EVERYTHING ON YOUR PHONE, INCLUDING THE INTERNAL SD CARD.
  4. Place this update.zip on your SD Card. Flash it in 2e recovery (twice). This will install Clockwork Mod Recovery. No root is necessary.
Installation:

  1. Transfer Serendipity_x.x.zip to your SD Card.
  2. Reboot into Clockwork Mod Recovery
  3. Flash Serendipity_x.x.zip
  4. Following installation, reboot the phone.
  5. If presented a screen about conversion, select "YES". This will enable the lagfix.
  6. Allow the phone to finish booting. This will take an abnormally long time. Somewhere between 2 and 4 minutes.
  7. Allow the phone to establish a data connection. This will take longer than normal, and should be done within a minute or two.

Ok I got the stock rom flashed back and rooted it using one click. Now for some reason I can't reboot into clockwork recovery mode. I flashed it successfully. So i click on reboot into recovery and nothing happens. I try clicking on install room from sd card and that doesnt work either

Sometimes you have to do the CWM update.zip twice to get it to go through. Did you do that, or are you past that part and stuck?

What is the error you're getting when you try and flash the ROM?

I'm getting ready to flash Serendipity for the first time, and I also have some questions. I'm currently running Cognition 4.1.1 and always before I have followed the "How to install Cognition Rom" YouTube vids religiously, but the Serendipity instructions deviate a little from that method. I just want be clear before I jump in.

Recommended

4. The YouTube vids use RomManager to do this step, but the Serendipity folks say it's not necessary (guess that lets you skip the extra root and set up your account and download steps to get the app). What's the best way to flash it without RomManager? Transfer the update.zip to the sd card, then press the volume rocker and power buttons simultaneously to enter recovery mode? What is meant by 2e recovery and why do I need to flash it twice?

Installation:

2. Again, the vids use RomManager to reboot into Clockwork Mod Recovery. Is this as simple as rebooting your phone, or do you need some special key combo to make it work?

4. I'm assuming you'll use whatever method to flash the Serendipity file you use to flash CWM, just do it once instead of twice?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Well, so far so good. I took a deep breath and decided I could step away from the YouTube vids a wee bit. TB is restoring my apps as I type.

I basically followed the directions from XDA on the link above, substituting the Galaxy S One Click root for their preferred method. Serendipity's instructions claim it's unnecessary; be glad to hear if anyone else could verify if it is or isn't. I also used the CWM update.zip from the Serendipity site rather than the XDA version; they may be the exact same files - I have no idea and didn't care to compare.

I did not go into the green CWM recovery menu after the first time I told it to "reinstall packages", but had to repeat this step twice. I assume that is what is meant by "flashing 2e in recovery (twice)" on the Serendipity instructions.

So that's it - about to reboot and take this puppy out for a spin to see what it can do!

All root methods work the same basic way using the same update.zip so it really doesnt matter. But if you have the CWM update.zip rooting is completely unnecessary.

with the reinstall packages thing, the first time you do it it installs the CWM update.zip, the second time it boots you into clockwork recovery, has nothing to do with the name

There are basically two differences with the ROM Manager or skipping the step like the Serendipity instructions tell you to. ROM Manager requires root. So in order to use ROM Manager and flash CWM, you have to have your phone rooted. When you just install the update.zip file, it installs CWM on your phone using the 2e recovery. If you're not using an app like Titanium backup to backup your apps or something like JuiceDefender to save battery, there's no need to root. But for me these options are necessities. So I always root. But the update.zip option is a bit of a time saver if you're not using these features.

Takes a deep breath, alright......I think I've decided to flash to serepedity. I'm using a captivate stock froyo 2.2......what can I expect to happen to my phone????

your phone will now be 2.2.1
Your app drawer will scroll like a cube.
Try out the paragon6 kernal to go with it.

Make sure to check out the mods in the serendipty kitchen to change your colors around as well

You can expect your phone to be faster, your app drawer, as mentioned by wretchedhorror will scroll up and down, not back and forth, it's just a much nicer user experience.

Well, before going nuts with everything, get used to the ROM. I've flashed Paragon, but I'm back with SpeedMod, I didn't see much improvement - plus I just don't want to fiddle with OC/UV settings. But that's just me.

The kitchen is great. There are two other themes there to try out, plus nice battery mods, transparent notifications, etc. No clock in the status bar is built into settings. The wallpaper selection is great, too!

Since this is the first time you'll be flashing to a custom rom, I'd suggest watching the "how to flash a custom rom" by mobile tech videos on youtube. He literally goes step by step on how to flash a custom rom. It's a 3 part video, and each is about 8-10 minutes long. I just recently flashed to serendipity 6.3 using the tutorial provided by mobile tech videos and got it done without any problems. I too was quite nervous, but the tutorial is extremely detailed and informative.

Besides the 3D app drawer (similar to launcher pro), you will see a bunch of new features such as the gingerbread theme, new unlock screens, an updated version of swype etc. However, the two biggest things that should jump out at you are the huge speed improvements in phone, as well as the addition of HSPA over 3G. The addition of these two features really make it seem like I have a new phone. Web pages and twitter feeds load up extremely fast without any lag or stutters. Plus the added internet speed is simply awesome :)

Strange, I do see the H instead of the 3G now and I figured it means that its on a faster speed now. However, my android marketplace downloads, facebook refresh rate, and generally my internet seems to have slowed down a little bit. I don't know though I just got it today so we'll see if the data improves tomorrow.

I followed that above steps, but my captivate phone does not see the serendipity_x.x.zip, even though i have place that zip file on the sd card.

in Odin, i don't see the master clear button at all?

the master clear isnt necessary, i never use it, but there should be a button right next to the 'start' button that says 'master clear,' you may have the non-one click version

and the zip should be wherever you placed it. you could try downloading it on the phone, it would be in the download folder then

I tried to flash serependity and it totaly failed when itried to load up clockwork recovery I got an error O_o

You should try rooting first,
then install rom manager to flash into recovery
(i always read that the latest version of clockwork doesnt work with some roms so i guess to be on the safe side flash version 2.5.1.2 not sure if that makes a difference)

Place the zip file on the root of your sd
Boot into recovery
wipe everything
then install zip from sd
choose zip from sd

find your serendipity file
install

enjoy!

Folks. First allow me to say that i am ever so grateful that the Android forums exist and all of you who are reading all these noob posts (like mine) and helping us all by responding in kindness.

I have an issue that i have not found so far in these forums:

1st time I have installed a ROM, although I have flashed a Kernel or two.
I first followed the XDA "how to install a custom ROM" instructions, & then (after experiencing this issue) followed the explicit instructions posted on the Serendipity 6.3 site.

in both cases, Everything works well that came with the ROM, I can browse the web, connect to my email etc. My issues arose from attempting to restore previously installed apps.

1. I can connect to Market, but NOTHING happens when "Accept Permissions" to begin to download an app the 1st app i am attempting to download is TB (of course)

1a. when following the XDA instructions, i copied over the TB Folder over to my internal SD card, so it could see the apps to restore, but restore batch script failed several times and had to do each individually (and not all worked)

1b. the Serendipity 6.3 Site suggests that i go and download TB from the market to start the app restore, but the Market will not let me download any apps!

2. After flashing Serendipity 6.3 the way the original site says, i had to flash in TB.zip and then copy over my TB folder to the internal SD card, first order of business (i thought) would be to restore the TB Pro version, but again, app hangs on the install.

THANKS for taking the time to read through my rant. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

did you delete any of your google talk service apps followed by any force closes?
That usually will prevent the market to not work

I use my backup root to back up and restore my apps. i will not use titanium ever

I had kind of a similar problem when I was on Phoenix Unleashed. Have you tried downloading apps using wifi? I noticed when I was having my problem that it would let me use wifi but not data. The only way I found out how to fix it was to start over fresh with a wipe and then a re-flash. But also I would recommend just using Titanium to backup the apps you need, but not backing up Titanium itself. I've found that it's easier to just re-download Titanium from the market afterwards than to deal with re-installing.

Well I did both ways, one with a Master Clear after first without (so all the apps remained on the internal SD)

I had no force closes, just nothing happens when i get to the point of activating the download. strange.

This was also the 1st experience of having to restore all apps I previously downloaded. I suspect the TB and the Market issues are unrelated.

Thanks for your comment - I never had any luck with Backup root.

I will try the WiFi tonight, thanks.

About TB app, i needed to download the TB Free/Root app first to get started, but when i could not DL the app, i copied a .zip of the free app (previously made with TB) and used ClockworkMod to install the app.

I thought with the app installed, that i would restore the PRO license i paid for, and begin restoring all apps, but alas....:(
