Root Trying to get to JB on Bionic

Hi all,

2 weeks of forum gigging to help solve my issue. time to post.

current state
Bionic Factory default 6.7.246.XT875

I was rooted and running Titanum BU and safestrap. managed to botch the whole thing, ran backup and proceeded to format the SD that had my backup ( Doh!!! wrong SD card Fool)

So now here I sit with
RSD Lite 5.7 and some nice ICS and JB files waiting.

from a stock ICS I should be able to go straight to JB right?
I have cdma_targa_9.8.2O-72_VZW-22_cfc.xml.zip all set on a NAS and am always successful decompressing and proceeding to the install phase just fine.

1st attempt
Got error on line 5 <step operation="oem" var="fb_mode_set" />
a forum post suggested removing line 5 and 24 from the XML file.
done!

2nd attempt
Error on line2 reboot-bootloader. specific error is
Failed flashing process. 2/24 reboot-bootloader -> no arrival message notification.

I have not been able to fine any information on that particular error.

re-booted back into fastboot ( Vol dwn key+PWR)
tried several times. same error. I have attached the XML file.

What am I missing?

Help much appreciated.

One thing to think about,
If you want to root, I would go to ICS first and root there.

IMHO, it is easier to root in ICS use OTA Rootkeeper to protect root then take the JB OTA and recover root than it is to root JB directly.

Then again, if you are fluent in linux that may not be the case.

Just my $.02

I rooted ICS so long ago I forgot how. I think I used Petes. but, not sure of that still works on ICS or not. Ill dig around to see what is the best method to root these days.

Thanks for the tip. yea, I know Linux but not well enough to dink around with my Phone. So I will take your advice.

so to summarize,
Root ICS
install rootkeeper
disable root / pull JB via OTA
re-enable root via rootkeeper
install Titainum BU
restore Apps
back in business

is that it?

Strange, the OTA update service is temporarily unavailable. It is my phone or the service? anyway, I can update via RSDLite and the Timmy10Shoes modified XML file.

I had ICS loaded SQLLite editor and titaniumBU. used rootkeeper to unroot.
decompressing now. Ill Keep you posted..

Go BLUES!!!!

Ok,
I have now been able to consistently reproduce this error.

Error on line2 reboot-bootloader. specific error is
Failed flashing process. 2/24 reboot-bootloader -> no arrival message notification.

I have not been able to fine any information on that particular error.
What does no arrival message notification mean?
Is RSD lite expecting the phone to respond?

Does your phone reboot into fast boot mode when this happens? Try with your phone in fastboot mode already. Start with power off and then hold the power button and the volume button until you see fastboot on the screen, then try and run rsdlite again.

so to summarize,
Root ICS
install rootkeeper
disable root / pull JB via OTA
re-enable root via rootkeeper
install Titainum BU
restore Apps
back in business

is that it?

The one note I would make here is after you root, make sure you update the su binaries to the most current version. Do this from within the SuperUser app (or SuperSU if that's your choice). THEN, install/protect root etc.

I believe my failure to update the binaries is what caused me to only have partial root after the update. It was fixable, but if you can avoid the hassle...

On other question, have you ever had bionic bootstrap or safestrap installed?

So now that my bionic is running JB, I headed over to the link provided in how to root.

Easy Root for Bionic running stock Jelly Bean

Loved Martys post and instrutions. He build a OVM file that can easily run in VMware workstation and provides a nice Linux OS with the root package scripts all set.

The steps are kind of Vague after you get the Linux console running.

" 5) Follow the instructions on the Linux console.

That should do it. If you need help I will be monitoring this thread."

Anyone able to provide more detail here? I have attach

Thanks SNeitzel for the Tips. So I am chipping away at this Root for my bionic for days. finally got root, now I am having some issues running Titanium BU. I suspect it may be related to the superuser binaries.

tons of log messages (100's / minute) of allows for request for root. but the app dies.,
within super user I don't see a way to update the binaries. can you help me figure that out?

Launch SuperUser, click INFO on menu bar at the top of the screen, 3rd section down, su binary "tap to check for updates".

Mine said it failed the first time and multiple times after that but it must have actually done something because I rebooted and tried again and it worked.
