Trying to pick the right android

I am going to be buying a new phone with the tax return this year. I currently have Verizon but am looking to move to Sprint. I've never owned an android phone before so I am completely new to the scene. Basically I am trying to decide in between the Epic and the Evo. I'll be using it for mobile web development, media player, and gaming. Basically as a second PC. The Epic hardware specs seem much better but there is a huge following the swears by the Evo. I intend to root either one so current installed rom is not that big of an issue. Just looking for a bit of guidance as all the articles I've read basically say they are both great phones. Any thoughts or recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Either one will be great, but if you prefer media, the GPU on the Epic is better so go with that one. However, Sprint may announce new dual core phones by March (CTIA) so there may be a whole lot more options.

Just make sure you'll have a 3G connection where you live, work and commute. Don't make the same mistake I made.

I switched to Sprint a couple years ago believing the BS that since Sprint uses the same towers that you'll end up with similar service (that is what they'll tell you in the store). The truth is if you're on a Sprint tower, you'll get 3G (maybe 4G if they have it in your area and you're outside) but if you end up on a Verizon tower (which happens more often than you'd think), you'll be relegated to a 1x EVDO connection which can barely stream Pandora on low quality.

I am listed as covered for 3G on the Sprint network. Assuming that Sprint's coverage maps are correct. A little leary about switching away from Verizon just b/c I know Sprint used to have shotty coverage. With verizon still offering unlimited data I thought about staying with them but their phone line up didn't really have one that looked as good as the Evo and Epic.

Just use the 30 day satisfaction policy to make sure you aren't screwing yourself.

They like to confuse their 3G map with their voice coverage map.

Is the 30 day satisfaction policy as easy as it sounds? If I'm not happy due to poor reception or other issue and the phones are undamaged I can return and cancel and get everything back?

Actually brings me to another question. Cases. I'd heard that the innocase and otterbox is the best. Could you offer any insight into that?

Look at the reviews, most of the brand name cases are excellent, but every now and then there is an issue (cases that scratch the phone, or something like that). Most of the time there is a 15 minute long Youtube video review that will provide 100x the info you actually need.
