Root Trying to root my NC

Good day everyone. Just recently purchased a NC. Have been trying to figure out what method is best for rooting it as I found a few. I am also trying to figure out if there is a stable verison of honeycmob out for the NC yet? If not, can you point me to the best rom (stable) with a solid look and feel. Pointing toward full instructions on how this all can be done would be great.

Honeycomb is graphics intensive, not well implemented on the Nook and not much development is going into it. Fun to look and play with for a few hours, but not for serious use.

Most of us here agree that CM7 is the best rom to go with. Our collection of guides is sticked at the top of the root section.
 
Read it again, the first link has 3 sections. :D

The third section, which uses a bootable sdcard to install, is what you'd want.

Running off the sdcard is for people who want to leave their NC stock for warranty or other reasons. It's harder to setup and update and it's more fragile and slightly slower, IMO.

If you flash the stock Nook to CM7 and change your mind, it's fairly easy to flash back to stock, should you need to (assuming your NC still works). :D

The Nook Color is one of the hardest tablets to brick b/c it always boots off the sdcard.
 
Are you refering to the section labeled: How to install CM7 via a bootable CWR sdcard (or repair a failed install).
 
Sounds like a plan.

Get the bootable sdcard working first and make sure you can boot off of it.
 
From the bootable CWM guide (one of the first steps):

How to boot into your CWM card?
  • Power down your NC.
  • Remove the existing sdcard from your NC.
  • Insert your bootable sdcard and hold your power button until your NC powers on.
  • If you boot into your rom instead of recovery, you didn't properly flash the sdcard. (Were there errors from WinZip?)

How to navigate those recovery menus:
Up/down volume buttons are used to navigate up and down,
press the power button to go back, and
press the "n" button to do the highlighted task.

Then press the power button until "reboot" option is visible. Remove your sdcard, then select "reboot system now", press "n"
 
So I got done with the process and got to step 25. I rebooted the NC and it is just sitting with a black screen but the screen seems to be on. Is that normal?


When it rebooted I did see the title that shows at the beginning of booting up but after that, nothing. I used a custom kernel from Dalingrin (the latest).
 
Oh-oh, which rom and which kernel?

I've never seen it but the black screen can be from using the wrong kernel OR not formatting data before installing CM7.

Downloading the required files:

As of the time of this post, the latest stable build is 7.03, and the latest gApps is 20110613 and the latest compatible Dalingrin kernel is 042411.

If you want to try the newer kernel, a release candidate is available, 7.1.0 RC1, but if you install a different Dalingrin kernel you want 063011 or 061811.

I actually got it back up. I ended up doing the process again without installing the kernel and it loaded well. I used the 063011 kernel. Which kernel can I use and can I run it now?

Also, I setup the NC with the same gmail account as my EVO and it doesn't show any of my apps. Do they come across or will I need to reinstall and buy the apps again?

No mixing allowed. The kernel has to match the rom. :D

You might as well install nightly #150 from Rom Manager, which includes a newer kernel and it boots up faster.
 
I will install the 042411 kernel and see how it goes. Can you explain to me why my apps from my EVO didn't come over even though I used the same gmail account?

Also, can I use Adobe Flash on the NC?
 
You need to reflash the rom, then flash the 042411 kernel. Probably should re-do the gApps too.

I used the same acct for my DroidX and NC and all my paid apps are there.
 
Gotcha. I will reflash. What benefits would I see in eflashing with that kernel as appose to staying the way I am without any custom kernels?

Is it only paid apps that are suppose to appear? If so, that is the problem because all of my apps are free. I just figured all apps would appear in the market.
 
Free apps appear to follow the device. Paid apps follow the user so all devices.

Anytime you change kernels, you want to reflash the rom. You might be able to reflash the rom w/o gApps, but they're small and don't take long.

With stock kernel, the fastest you can overclock is about 925, but with 042411 you can do up to 1300.

New kernel that's now included with the latest nightlys have better standby battery life, support for usb devices (like mice/keyboards) and build #150 and higher have faster boot time.
 
Rom Explorer... download rom... cyanogenmod nightlies.

#150 is good so is #160. (Check out the ratings, which is what I do.)
 
It keeps asking me to install clockworkmod recovery. What is that all about? Do I need different SD card from the one I used on the original flash I did with the instructions you gave me earlier?
 
The other one you created is bootable, but if it's at least 8 gb you could just wipe it and reuse it. O/W, yes you'll need a blank one for many apps.

CWR is required to install any rom, backup/restore or many updates. It's also on the bootable disk, but that doesn't help you out here.
