Help Trying to update with Kies - my phone is German!

My God Kies is a bad piece of kit !

We have a Galaxy S2 and a Galaxy Y. Connecting the Galaxy Y to Kies was fine at first and we got a update prompt to Android 2.3.6. All went fine. Noticed improvement in battery life.

Later connected the S2 (still on 2.3.4).

When searching for the firmware it says 2.3.4 currently installed latest version. PDA:KI4 / PHONE:KI1 / CSC:KH1 (DBT)

The Phone is not listed in the "Latest Auto-Download Firmware Settings" It just says "Download latest firmware for ......."

The S2 is unlocked (sim free). on O2 pay as you go. As is the Y.

However it was bought from Pixmania who are based in France. The Phone was In German at first. Could this have anything to do with the issue? It apparently has a German csc(DBT)

EDIT: Just found that LATEST Unbranded is on.. OXA - I9100XXKL1 / I9100OXAKL1 (Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread)
For DBT - Which is some German telecoms its 2.3.4.

Am I able to go to Unbranded or UK Firmware ? ? ? ? ?

That's the strange thing about unbranded phones. They take longer to get their kies or ota updates than carrier branded phones. Even though if you wanted you could flash unbranded firmware from here before the carriers release theirs.

By Unbranded you basically mean sim free?? I didn't buy the phone on a particular Network so that's fine...

However it says (DBT) Which is some German version of Firmware.

So it is possible to flash a UK version? - Would that help when it comes to future Updates via Kies?
Cant see the UK / European 2.3.6 Versions in that List.

Yeah by unbranded I meant sim free/ not locked to any network.

You could flash any of them, they're all from somewhere in europe, not all the uk. The ones from say holland work fine on uk phones so uk ones would work fine on german phones. You wouldn't be able to update via kies anymore though as you wouldn't have a carrier branded firmware so kies wouldn't recognise it. But its the small price you pay to get your updates quicker than most.

today I connected my SGS2 with KIES for the first time and its showing a firmware update alrite, I was happy. but its taking ages to download the update. 20% in like 30-40 mts I guess. Finally I cancelled the update process for now.
Is it like this normally?? or is it my internet conn(its not sluggish normally)

currently my SGS2 IS;
BASEBAND VER I9100XXKDJ
KERNEL VER 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE2-CL187606
ROOT@DELL101#2
BUILD NO GINGERBREAD.XWKE2

Updates takes awhile. The files is pretty big I think and Kies is pretty slow I think. I did notice though that on my last update, it took a couple of hours to reach about 50% and then it was quite fast after that. It finished less than an hour later.

I believe faster internet connection makes a difference as well....

Cheers

finally upgraded from 2.3.3 to 2.3.5 through KIES(wat slow app it is too). took around 2hrs 20mts for the whole process. miss the days of HTC Desire when there were easy upgrades through OTA's.
dont Samsung support OTA or wat.
my SGS2 is UK-O2 branded one but using in India now after unlocking.
