TuneIn Radio

John Jason

Android Enthusiast
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 on T-Mobile, not rooted, kernel 2.6.35.11. I have used the free version of TuneIn Radio for a long time and everything has worked fine until just now. Suddenly my favorite station All Classical - Home has developed a warbling echo. Only this preset has the echo; all other stations are unaffected. I also play the same stream to my desktop computer (and then to my stereo) and it has no echo.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the free version of TuneIn Radio, uninstalled the free version and installed the Pro version, uninstalled the Pro version and reinstalled the free version, all without any change. I have also pulled the battery and restarted the phone, with no success. I deleted the preset and reinstalled it, but I still get the echo.

I also e-mailed TuneIn Radio tech support a couple days ago, but they have not responded.

I have a number of questions:

1) After each reinstall I noticed that all my presets were still there. This means that there is a config file somewhere. I'd like to nuke it and start over. Does anyone know where the config file is?

2) Has this ever happened to anyone else?

And since I'm talking about TuneIn Radio, some general questions:

3) Is it possible to add a custom link to a station? If so, how?

4) Is there a way to sort the preset list?

5) What is the relationship between Music Player and TuneIn Radio? Why does task manager say at first that TuneIn Radio is running and then an hour later TuneIn Radio has disappeared from the list and task manager says Music is running?

6) Considering that I only want to listen to real radio stations, are there other streaming radio players that I could consider besides TuneIn Radio? (Slacker offers practically no stations, and Pandora-type streamers are not what I'm looking for.) I'm open to suggestions.

Hi!

I wasn't able to find your case in our support queue so feel free to e-mail us again at support AT tunein DOT com.

Also, we've just released a new version of our application (6.2). That update may help out your sound issues.

Thanks for the response.

The first time I e-mailed support I did so from your web site. I will copy and paste the above again to support at tunein dot com using my regular e-mail client.

I already have version 6.2, which is what T-Mobile supplies.

I had a similar problem with tunein this morning. I stream through my car stereo on my commute to work. Everything sounded tinny. I didn't try a different station though.

I had a similar problem with tunein this morning. I stream through my car stereo on my commute to work. Everything sounded tinny. I didn't try a different station though.

I received an e-mail from a tech support lady at TuneIn and now my problems are solved, although there does seem to be something wrong with the stream I was listening to.

She clued me in to something I was unaware of, that is, you can swipe left and right on the Preset and it will give you available alternate streams. For AllClassical.org it offered three streams. I was using the 64K MP3 stream.so I selected the 64K AAC stream and the echo disappeared. As a test I switched back to the 64K MP3 stream and the echo returned. The AAC stream sounds just as good as the MP3 stream, so my problem is solved.

She also suggested that, while you cannot re-order your Presets list within the app on your phone, you can do so by creating an account at tunein.com, and then logging in to TuneIn Radio on your phone with the same username.

Note that when you exit the app and open it the next time, it will not remember the particular stream you were using. If the 64K MP3 was the default stream on that station, it will load again next time and you have to then manually choose the alternate stream. This is true even if you have the setting selected to automatically open the last played station when starting the app.
Although I like this app and use it all the time (Pro version), I'd sure like to see a future update include the ability to remember the last stream along with the station, as I find it a bit annoying to have to select it every time.

It looks like the dev team is pretty quick with their responses. Why not send them a quick message? they might be able to include it in the next update.

Does anyone know what happened to TuneIn Radio? This used to be my favourite app for listening to BBC and some US radio stations. But now it seems to be very geographically restricted. I'm finding it can only lists and receive/streams Chinese radio stations. And on the "Live" tab, it's giving messages about "United States only" and "Not available in your country".

I know the BBC doesn't impose geographical restrictions on their radio streams. But now TuneIn can't get them at all.

Blame the Recording Industry Association of America I guess? Worth contacting the TuneIn devs, try and find out what happened?

I use it every day, but I'm in the US. I'm guessing you are spot on with RIAA:rolleyes:

The RIAA is only interested in stopping illegal downloads of copyrighted music and video. I find it hard to believe that the BBC pirates the things they air. I'm in the US and I listen to radio stations from all over the world, including BBC, Radio Classique (Paris). Swiss Classic, and stations in Toronto, Melbourne, Peru as well as several in the US. I have never found an internet stream that I couldn't connect to.

I suspect it's the carrier. Check with friends who use a different carrier and see if they can connect to the stations in question.

I've tried two different carriers and ISPs already, but I'm almost certain it's not that. There's a couple of things..

1) When I try and play a featured "Live" station, there's a recorded announcement with an American accent saying this station is only available in the United States, or is not available in your country. That's any stations except one, called "Suzhou News Radio"..which is a Chinese station. And in the "Browse" tab, it's Chinese stations only. When I try and search "BBC", it's giving nothing found.

2) You say it works OK and you can get stations from all over the world. So I'm now thinking what we get in China has been fixed so it only gets Chinese stations. Presumably because Beijing doesn't want The People listening to foreign radio stations.

3) I'm sure the BBC isn't pirating LOL. I can listen to BBC radio stations via the browser no problems at all. BBC restricts on-line TV to the UK, but not radio apparently.

I'm going to email the TuneIn devs tomorrow, see what they have to say.

EDIT:

A friend in the UK says TuneIn is working just fine there. So it's definitely been nobbled in China.
