The Verge reports on the upcoming Turing Phone, which "aims to put security, durability, and fashion above all else."

Well, it looks like a flop from the fashion side of things. I don't think I've seen an uglier device. And don't even get me started on that UI:

So rugged good looks aside, "the standout feature of Turing, according to Chao, is the Turing Imitation Key. Rather than rely on third parties for authentication and encryption duties, Turing Robotics has built its own end-to-end, decentralized authentication scheme that is fully functional offline since it relies on your phone's private key."

It's also supposed to be fully waterproof and ships with its own cryptocurrency, Turing Coin (because that's one thing the world desperately needs more of). This sucker also packs a 2.5GHz SD801, 5.5" 1080p display, 13MP rear camera, non-removable 3000mAh battery, and NFC.

And it starts at $610 for just 16GB of onboard storage.

Sound like your dream device - or just a dream?

This has "fail" written all over it.

1. Alan Turing was perhaps the most brilliant and forward-thinking minds of the 20th century, rightly considered the father of computing as we know know it. To appropriate his name is tasteless and insulting.

2. The design. "This is mass market, but geared towards the designers and fashion-conscious individuals. The elite." Only if they're blind and devoid of all sense of style. This monstrosity fell from the top of The Ugly Tree and hit every branch on the way down.

3. The company. "Turing Robotics Industries (TRI), based in San Francisco, US and Shenzhen in China" Who better to trust with your privacy than an anonymous company based in the PRC that has "has built its own end-to-end, decentralized authentication scheme that is fully functional offline since it relies on your phone's private key." Yup. nothing whatsoever to be concerned about there then...

Just call me CynicAl.

Sorry but that thing is ugly.
What's the RAM specs?
And what's with the union flag backdrop?
.... And wtf is that UI?
