Help Turn off 3G on 2.3?

Does anyone know if 3G can be turned off in 2.3? I had it in 2.2 and got 3 days of battery use and want to see it happen again.

i heard it is not possible, but i have also heard juice defender (its a battery saver app that turns off 3g while screen is off amongst other things) works. so i dunno for sure.

FWIW i just tried making a task in Tasker to turn off 3G and it said "this is not supported on this device" so i really dont know any more. kinda weird GB would not allow this as 1x would be fine to pull e-mails while the screen is off to save some of that battery.

i mean i guess you could rock your 1X connection for voice...but seems kinda...idk...2002ish? but hey, whatever floats your boat...you're the first ive seen ask for it...

Sometimes I dont need 3G, so I turned it off and only checked my emails and fb and stuff when I needed to only. While having it off, I would go over 3 days on the battery. I like using 3G when I want it. I like to be able to get 3 days on a single charge when I need it.

I have found the apps that i used to use to do this no longer work, the only way i have been able to do this is by going into settings > Battery & data manager > Data delivery and unchecking the box for Data Enabled.

Airmaxx, I have tried many also and no luck. CCRay, that works, but too much work to get there. Im sure some of these apps will update and fix it for us.

I found this:

From your Android phone, dial *#*#4636#*#* and then wait a couple of seconds. The testing menu will appear. To exit back to your normal phone, just press your back/exit button. If you're going to explore the various options on the testing menu, take care. Many of my friends and colleagues have tried this on their own phones, and no one has had a problem. But you never know.
As for the method to turn off data, select the first option on the testing menu (phone information), then press your menu key. You'll see a selection of buttons, one of which says "disable data connection". Press it, and you're all done. To re-enable your data connection, go to the same menu, where you'll find that the name of the button is now "enable data connection".

works OK on my new Defy+ (v2.3.4) I use it to prevent dataroaming costs!

Here's what worked on my (3g) HTC Wildfire:

1) enter ##3282# into the dailpad (##DATA#)
2) when the EPST menu comes up, select "Edit Mode"
3) enter your MLS code at the password prompt (I used MEID Converter to find my MLS code)
4) Select "EVDO" and "Preferred Mode"and choose "CDMA only".
5) Finally, use your phone's "Menu" button and select "Commit Modifications"

Why would I want to do this? Well, in the SF Bay Area, MetroPCS has installed a token 3g network after getting slow buy-in on their 4g network. The problem is, more often than not, there's no data service when the Wildfire is in EVDO mode. Being able to force the phone into 1xRtt has been the only way for me to have dependable, although disappointingly slow, data service.

This phone also has/had the Gingerbread Dialer bug. After making a call, the dialer would get stuck "on", the phone would get hot, the perfomance would lag and the battery would be flat in 3 hours. The problem went away once I used Startup Cleaner and Advanced Task Cleaner on most of the stock MetroPCS and HTC apps.

The phone works well now. Thanks to everyone on the forums who provide the clues needed to solve phone mysteries.
