Help turn off 4g?

Is there a way to turn off 4g or is that permanent?

I ask because if there 4g network goes out, I wonder what happens to the phones?

Also I thinking that 3g would save on data?

Settings > more > mobile networks > network mode> CDMA. CDMA/LTE is both radios on. It will help with your battery 3G only

I'm curious to try it on and off over the next few days as I hear that 4g really eats at the battery. It was pretty miserable my first day. Now I also have the extended battery, so hopefully that will help.

Probably not that much. I get moderate LTE coverage at home and good LTE coverage at work.

Neither sucks the life out of the battery like a few people might make you believe.... unless you are actually pulling down a lot of data over 4G, like A LOT.
