Root turn your captivate into a wifi hotspot

It seems that the only way to use this app is to have a root-ed phone. It doesn't seem to work if I side-load tha app. I'm confused and disappointed.

On my olde park-it-pc, win-doze mobile phone I fetched a CAB file,
did the install dance, and viola -- a hot spot.

hoping for advice and encouragement,
~~~ 0;-Dan
Well, if you have loaded this app and are trying to run the hotspot without paying AT&T for the tethering option, you are already doing something illegal. Might as well root your phone. Not slamming you. I just don't see the logic in not wanting to root your phone.
Your other option is load the Cognition ROM. You will be automatically rooted and the hotspot is built right in to Froyo.
Hardly "illegal".
There's a massive difference between something being against a "Terms of Service" agreement, and it being against the law. I'd advise educating yourself on this so that you don't spread misinformation.
Just used AC SideLoad Wonder Machine to put the newest version on my captivate. Seems to work fine with the newest experimental version
What should download speeds be on my phone? A speed test only showed .21mbps - which is also what i get when I run speed tests directly on the phone.... I thought 3g was faster than that
yes, mobileAP works fully now without the need to load the service manually each time. Get the update.zip package from the first link I linked.
I'm confused. The link you posted implies that you need to flash a new kernel in order for the service to start on boot. Yet you imply that you just need a new update.zip?
Which is correct?
Thanks.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by Barnacle stunk the joint up? I've been using Barnacle for some time now and it works great. What is the downside to using Barnacle or is this one of those things that work great for some people and not for others? :confused:
Thanks a million! this works better than all the market solutions I have tried. Barnacle stunk the joint up too. Not the fastest connection in the world, but reliable and it works well on my iPad. This gives me the last piece of functionality that I had with my jailbroken iPhone. Android is awesome.
I noticed too the Barnacle is no longer in the market. Hmmmmm
Anyway I also noticed with my Cognition rom that wifi hot spot is included and works great. No more need for Barnacle.
What files did you load with Wonder Machine: Wireless Tether 2.0 or MobileAP (both referenced at top)? Because Wireless Tether is a single apk file but the zip file for MobileAP contains a dozen files in half a dozen folders. I tried to boot the zip file as update.zip, but my Captivate aborted the update and I had to do a regular reboot.
Is this the kernal issue? Is there some AT&T malware that prevents me from installing certain apps through the update.zip manuver?
Thanks.
Maybe I'm missing something here but I installed this and none of my WiFi devices could see it - Even when I tried to manually enter in the SSID, -nothing-. Am I trying to use this app incorrectly? Does this not make your phone a wireless router in essence?
wireless tether back when I did that - I just flashed cognition 3.04 which appears to have Mobile AP built in
Ditto here. Cognition mobile AP is all I need. Does anyone know if Serendipity has the mobile AP options built in? Probably going to flash to that sometime this coming week.
So can someone plz let me know this: if I use my Captivate to tether, am I charged for any data that is transfered over my phone or does this method circumvent the provider?
This method requires a data plan that the provider will charge normal data rates for. In the US it requires a data plan or you will be charged a very unreasonable amount per MB.
This is also considered tethering by AT&T and if you use AT&T in the US and use this for tethering, you are using it at your own risk and may be automatically "upgraded" to a $45 a month tethering plan by AT&T.
That sounds kinda scary... How would they know if you are tethering if you have a data plan?
They don't. They have no way to tell at all. They will suspect something if your data usage goes up for a long period of time. So I wouldn't recommend trying to start your own wireless ISP with it.
This is exactly like how they want to charge you money each month to use AT&T Navigator when google maps does the same thing for free.
stumbled across this great little app for root only needs super user perm.
to turn captivate into wifi hotspot
Downloads - android-wifi-tether - Project Hosting on Google Code
thats the page that host them all
this is the newest link to apk download.
wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre9.apk - android-wifi-tether - Wireless Tether for Root Users 2.0.5-pre9 *** EXPERIMENTAL *** - Project Hosting on Google Code
I updgraded to Froyo 2.2 last wednesday. When it was all said and done, I saw a mobileAP option in the settings. I turned it on and imediately a little verify message popped up about 5-7 times and then a message came on my top task bar that told me that I would need a tethering plan to use this app. Basically by installing this app and not getting a message from them now, I know that it thinks I am just using the data plan. No more little verify message anymore.
Thank You for finding this gem of an App.
This app works great. Screw off AT&T. LOL Oh...I used the SuperOneClick.exe to root and set the allow for non-market apps. I feel free now. YES!!!!!!!!!!
What happens if you have an unlimited plan?
You will probably get the same message, "unlimited" doesn't include tethering in AT&T's world. If you want to use tethering you can cough up the $20 a month or use a ROM that doesn't have the AT&T gimpware.
Segfault is rite I called ATT yesterday. I have an unlimited plan as well It was going to cost me $45 for a 4 gig tethering plan 4 gigs is nothing
I rooted my Samsung Captivate a few days ago using the super one click method and the allow non market apps.Installed Side load Wonder Machine on my pc,and installed the Tethering app mentioned above WORKS GREAT!!!!! I connected to my network and I got up to 300/kbs on utorrent in a test! AWESOME
One way could be to inspect the contents of your traffic. (Which is none of their business.)
For instance, if your phone is making Http requests, and the Http headers indicate it is from, let's suppose, a Safari browser on a Macintosh, or perhaps IE 8 on Windows, then it would seem to indicate the request is coming from a computer. After all, the phone's browser doesn't send http headers indicating the browser is IE 4 on Windows 95.
Now if they looked into your traffic and discovered that, it would be evidence, but not proof that you are tethering.
In a more general sense, if the contents of your packets is traffic that would come from a computer application that does not run on the phone, that is good evidence you are tethering.
Another invasive way they could find out would be to have a software update or code on your phone that "phones home" with the signatures of what applications are installed. They could then compare this against a blacklist of known applications that are good for end users and enable additional functionality.
AT&T: Rethink Pessimism
You are overthinking this, AT&T is too lazy to bother with this and probably couldn't pull it off it they wanted. They don't even bother to force dataplans on smartphones they don't brand themselves and would just take getting a list of updated IMEI numbers.
What they do know is that 99% of their customer aren't going to bother installing a custom ROM. So they just stuck some toll application on the phone that checks your data plan before it allows tethering. Heck, you might even be able to get around it by installing a 3rd party app if you sideload it.
They make a boat load of money selling the AT&T Navigator service on the same phone that has Google maps on it. They don't need to lock down hard on tethering to make money, they just had to make so that was the easiest way for the average customer to get it is to cough up $20.
I did the same thing and couldn't connect my PC to the phone... The PC saw the connection but failed to connect and it seemed the phone never even tried establishing anything. :(
