Root Turning off 2.3 update.

I am giving my old Droid Incredible phones to my kids to essentially function as an iPod touch (use WiFi only, download game apps, play music, etc.). My kids are 8 and 6 so pretty much they want them to play games. I have done factory resets on both and they were never rooted. I want to turn off the 2.3 update because my wife's Droid Incredible never worked the same after that update. My first question is do i have to root to have my phone to have it quit asking me to update to 2.3? I can't expect my kids to always cancel the install so I want to turn off the 2.3 software update. If I do have to root and follow Sotty's guide above, can I get by with only doing steps 1-4? Right now one Incredible is running 2.2 and the other is running 2.3. I am assuming doing steps 1-4 will get me back to 2.2 on my wife's old 2.3 phone. I have have since moved on to a rooted Rezound and my wife has an iPhone 5.
 
I don't have a definitive answer for you. I would assume that as of 2013, the update you would get would be the correct update. Back in 2011, the 2.3 update was a disaster. Verizon pushed a Sprint EVO ROM as the 2.3 update, so I totally understand your concern.

If it were me, I'd root it and put CM 7.2 Stable on the phone and uncheck all data except WiFi. Hopefully Scotty sees this and can offer some potentially more informed insight.

one way that i know of is changing the build prop or flashing a script or something(if i can find it on xda) to prevent fota(filmware over the air). ill come back and link yu.
