Help Turning off all network coverage..

Hi, I'm going abroad and would like to just use the wifi and nothing else, how can I turn everything else off so I don't get incoming calls or texts etc?

Airplane mode.

But that will turn off WiFi also.

I think the only way to do this would be to remove the SIM, then it'll just function as a PDA.

I wasn't sure if the phone would actualy work wothout a SIM, but I've just tried it on mine, and it complains but still works OK and connects to wireless fine.

When you first put airplane mode on, it may indeed turn wifi off. However, you can simply turn it on again. Try it ;)

Well f@ck me sideways, I didn't know that. Excuse me for now asking a bloody daft question, but doesn't that defeat the object of airplane mode? I thought the idea was to turn off all radio transmissions from the phone.

Thinking about it, I still prefer my solution. It's a more certain way of making bloody sure I'm not going to inadvertently get charged some exorbitant rate for some accidental data or receiving a text from my network.

No, wifi is different to mobile networks. Mobile network transmissions can interfere with instrumentation, wifi doesnt.

Infact some airplanes now have wifi networks.

Fair enough.

...and it's aeroplanes in the UK;)

Indeed, however if a menu or folder item spells something incorrectly (eg airplane mode / program files), I tend to stick to the incorrect spelling for the duration of the conversation, if I had already refered to it using its visible name ;)

I prefer consistency over correct English spelling when we refer to something universal

*sniff*
No, I'm going. You can't stop me.
You never really loved me anyway, you were always playing with that bloody phone of yours, well I've had enough.
