Help Turning off the screen when in calls

I keep pressing buttons (mute and speaker phone) with my cheek when in phone calls. I know there is a proximity sensor on the phone somewhere, but I can't work out how to hold the phone for it to turn the screen off.

Has anyone worked out how to hold the phone to turn off the screen when in a call, or alternatively turn the screen off manually when in a call (pressing the power button gets cancelled once the proximity sensor kicks in)

The proximity sensor works great for me. Maybe you have a faulty one.
To my knowledge the proximity sensor is at the right side of the earpiece grill. You can check if that is working by placing your finger over it on a call.

just lock the phone that turns the screen off if your sensor isn't Woking.

Thats my problem. The sensor works, but its too sensitive (or insensitive). I can lock the phone, but my ear triggers the sensor and then must move away because the phone turns on again.

I'm wondering if there is a way to turn off the sensor so I can rely purely on locking and unlocking the phone with the power button.

In case anyone else is having this issue, I solved it with Tasker by creating a profile for "In-Call" then "System Lock"

It doesn't actually lock the phone, but it just turns off the screen and doesn't turn on again by triggering the sensor. Pressing the power button can still turn the screen on and off again, but the sensor isn't turning the screen back on again

How exactly did you create that task/profile? Cause I have the exact same problem, and just bought Tasker to get rid of this annonying problem... :)

As mentioned, create a profile that is triggered by "In-Call" and then have it do "System Lock"

When you put the phone down, it'll turn the screen back on, however you can still use the power button to turn it in while in a call

do you mean incoming call? because then it shuts off before I can answer... or where do you find the "in-call" option?

I would have thought that "in-call" means when your phone is actually in a call... as in connected, not when there's an incoming call...

Yeah I thought that too, but I can't find that option in the menus of Tasker..

I see... I only had Tasker for 1 week (for the trial)... I wanna get it, but haven't got round to it just yet!

I know that it lets you set lots of variables... I would have thought one would have been something to do with the phone state being in a call... I'm sure that someone will put us right though!! :)

I think "phone offhook" (in events) is the one you want. Thats for if the phone is dialing, has an active call, or is on hold. Then again I've only been using Tasker for 2 weeks, so there might be a better option...

Well then Amerie... looks like you could have sorted that one then!! :)

well, that was the options I was looking for.. but I still got the problem with the screen turning on as soon as the proximity sensor is off, ans that's what I want to avoid... any help?

sorry for the kart reply Amerie got it exactly right.
the task it needs to trigger is 'phone' -> 'system lock'

this disables the proximity sensor, temporarily

I have just fixed my proximity sensor issue. I watched the 'how to dissasemble HTC Desire HD' video on youtube and once I had the case off I could see the problem! The whole of the area under the speaker grill was absolutly covered in dust and dirt! I'm suprised I could still hear anything through the speaker let alone the proximity sensor working! I carefully cleaned the whole area and while I was there I removed, cleaned and re-attached the speaker too. Put it back together and problem solved!
