Root [Tutorial] How to root the Samsung Rugby Smart

First time forum user: so please excuse my ignorance

In order to get to recovery mode, I had to use the following steps (in case anybody has the same problem I had).


To enter the Android System Recovery mode, follow these steps:

1. With the phone turned off, press the Power key and Volume Up keys at the same time.
The Samsung logo will appear for a few seconds and then disappear. Continue to press the Power key and Volume Up keys.
2. When the Samsung logo reappears, release the Power key and Volume Up keys then press and hold the HOME key.
3. Continue to press the HOME key for 15-20 seconds, until Recovery mode is launched and the Android System Recovery icon is displayed.
4. Release the HOME key.
5. Press the MENU key.

6. The following options are displayed:
  • reboot system now: this option turns on your phone.<br />• apply update from sdcard: this option allows you to apply updates from your memory card to your phone.
  • wipe data/factory reset: deletes all data from the phone except pictures and videos.
  • wipe cache partition: allows you to delete all cache data such as log files.
  • install fota: allows you to install over-the-air firmware.


I have not yet installed or updated my phone with the zip file. I just did this as an exercise to make sure that I had everything right in order to get to recovery mode. If there is anyone who can give any insight as to why I had to follow different protocol, please let me know. When I purchased this phone, the listing on ebay said that this phone was unlocked. I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it. Will this exacerbate a problem when rooting? If anyone has any insight, it would be greatly appreciated.

I used the procedure you outlined when I first received my Rugby smart a year ago, but after installing a custom recovery and developing on the phone for awhile it was no long an available "boot to recovery" method for some reason.

Unlocked phones should only be SIM unlocked which has no bearing on recovery / android versions. The only thing the SIM unlock should do is allow you to use whatever SIM card you want in the device.
 
Phone randomly turns off then turns on back.
phone is rooted.
1st. Goes black you heard the start up tone.
2nd. Lock pattern is then displayed back.
 
After testing out CM10 I tried to do a restore from Clock Work Recovery to get back to 2.3 but it does not boot after the restore.
 
I tried to restore everything and aslo only system but it still does not boot stock ginger bread 2.3.im currently using cm9 but wifi is not working.
 
hi im new and ive tried multiple times to copy the update to my usb storage but everytime it says that it cant be copied and makes me skip it, any ideas?

I don't know why this happens but it does so backup everything beforehand.

1. Download the update.zip file below.

2. Copy the zip file into the USB Storage on the Rugby Smart.

3. Boot the Rugby Smart into Recovery


4. Choose the apply update from sdcard and select the update.zip file with the home button.

5. Now choose reboot system now and confirm with reboot.

Your Samsung Rugby Smart should have root now.

The Recovery instructions above are not correct. For the correct Recovery instructions I entered in Youtube: samsung rugby smart recovery mode. The part that is wrong is that it says to continue to press the power and volume up keys after the Samsumg logo reappears, when you should only hold the volume up key until you see the android with a box logo appear....then you press the menu key once.
 
It was very slow, so i decided to root it in order to control things like gain processing speed, I was searching the web until finally found you guys... Thanks a lot!!!
Btw
I did it With "Boot Stock Recovery"
following this steps:
-Power off device
-Vol Up + Power
-Release both when logo appears
-Logo will reappear in white shade
-Press and hold home when white logo disappears
-The logo will appear in a yellow shade -- keep holding home
-A logo with a box, an arrow pointing out of it and an android will appear
-Release menu key
-Press home key
-A menu in blue will appear after a few seconds
use the Up/down button to move and Home to select an option

Secondly you need an insecure boot.img:
MH-Kernel v1.2

This is also a slightly modified kernel, so far it proved to be more efficient than the stock kernel, meaning mildly better battery life.

With these two things you can play to your heart's content

Flash to CM9, CM10, Paranoid or my personal favorite, AOKP-JB, all of which are already debloated.

Is AOKP-JB available for the Rugby? I couldn't find it.
