Help tv hdmi connection issues

Hi

I've purchased a cable from eBay to allow me to view my phone on tv.

It's a mhl to hdmi media adapter. Micro 11 pin usb.

the tv is a rear projection Sony brava with hdmi slot.

Now when I connect this up the picture is distorted. Also the phone doesn't charge as it should...

Any suggestions?

Is this connector a standard? Have you tried plugging in a different device to see if the picture is still distorted across all devices?

Otherwise, have you thought that it might be the cord?

I bought an MHL adaptor off Ebay advertized as Genuine Samsung MHL2 which should have just connected my phone to my TV without any extra power, which it didn't, I never got my refund after returning so beware!
There are topics on this very subject on the internet if you look hard enough, if it's a genuine one that you have purchased then it should just plug into your phone/ hdmi with no extra power needed.
