Accessories TV Out with the Captivate?

I presume many of us have seen the video from the Galaxy S forum that shows a gentleman's Galaxy S hooked up to a 40" plasma via the 3.5mm headphone jack. The video quality was pretty decent and I like the possibility of being able to download vids to the phone and then playing them over my plasma.

If anyone knows this-

Is this capability possible with the Captivate?

Just how good is the 720 quality over a 3.5mm jack?

If it can do this and do it competently, it just might change my mind about getting the Droid X. I like the Blockbuster app, but the fact that I can't pipe it to my TV via the HDMI out is disturbing. My TV doesn't have DLNA ability.

The output you're referring to was: 3.5mm > composite video. I.e. not an HD output.
 
yeah, no way you can get 720p over a headphone jack. I dont know about the DLNA though. that could perhaps do HD.

Another question- given the info above, does that mean I could game over my 42" plasma if I use the cable? I ask because my gaming time is virtually non-existent since my son arrived 6 months ago. If I can hook it up to the TV in my bedroom, it becomes a bit more convenience.

Also, I think I read that it has surround sound. This true as well?

Not real surround sound. Simulated is what it has.

The video output is def not HD also.
 
I really hope the TV out function is available. It doesnt matter if its HD or not 480 is fine.
I cant wait to load up some mkv and .avi movies by simply dragging and dropping it into the phone instead of only using .mp4s with the itunes approval. And then hooking it up to our 60" plasma in our conference room right in front of all the Iphone4 dudes. Don't get me wrong- I'll surely offer them the same movies I have but... "whats this! Oh no you cant play Divx and Xvid movies on your Godphone! :eek: Only .mp4's So sorry" lets just enjoy watching me play these movies on my phone.
Please let this happen. :D
 
They say there is some sort of wireless syncing to other Samsung TVs. I have a Samsung TV which is a few years old; does this technology require a new feature implemented in the newest of televisions or will mine be able to use this?

DLNA is a wireless media (Video, Music, Pics) streaming method that is a couple yrs old and is more common among the 6,7,8,9000 Samsung series tvs. I have a 52" B650 that has DLNA capability. Only thing is that your Tv has to be connected to your network or just have a wireless adapter/capability. Then the media on the phone can be accessed thru the TV.
Many bluray players have it also. So you can connect the phone to bluray players if it has a wireless capability or just connect it to your wireless network and have it displayed on TV.

You can get a 3.5mm -> a/v cable. I found one at Amazon for $4. It's not high def, obviously.

By the way, I'm getting a Samsung 46" LCD TV with DLNA support. It'll take a while because I had to ship back the 40" one they sent me by mistake, but I'll report how well DLNA works at some point probably late next week.

I'll be doing it via my HTPC. Dang ol' Samsung didn't include DLNA in their 5xxx series sets.

DLNA has nothing to do with wireless. DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) is a specification for sharing Audio/Video/Pictures across a network, wired or wireless. It has various categories of devices, too: Players, Servers, Controllers and Renderers.

There are many devices that support it, including newer Samsung TVs made from 2010 onwards. If you want a good free DLNA server on Windows, try TVersity. For a good client (Windows, Mac, Linux) try Boxee (or XBMC, on which it is based). Many NASs these days have a DLNA server built in, too.

My bad I didnt know DLNA is an Association not a function.
I stream video from my laptop to my 2009 Samsung B650 using the "All Share" DLNA feature and they are not wired together- so I thought it was mostly a wireless function. I guess as long as the devices are on the same network.
Anyways the DLNA feature on the Galaxy S is wireless according to the GT-I9000 manual so I'm guessing it be the same for the Captivate. Cant wait to try it out- streaming videos from my lappie to the phone or the phone to the TV. :D What you know 'bout that Iphone!

remember you need both your devices your Bluray player and your phone on your network to broadcast, but try it out and let us know! My TV is not hooked up to my network, but it does support DLNA so I may put it on there!
