Ok, well if it needs to be more defined, maybe I can define it better. If your GPS performance improved, but it still drops lock, is inaccurate, takes long to lock or does other wierd things that hinders your ability to us it fuctionally as you would on any other smartphone with propperly fuctioning GPS, then for all intensive purposes, it sucks. If for some reason that makes someone feel uncorfortable to call it sucking instead of "less than perfect" (your vote is annonymous) feel free to not vote.

I am not looking for "sort of" fix, "almost fixed" or better. I am looking for is it working reliably and fully, or is it not, and how you went about recieving this update.

But as far as the data goes now there seems to be a reasonable amount of folks who say that they pulled the update and it works great.. Which sort of kills this "2 different update" rumor.

In case it is not clear what I am trying to do here, I am not trying to start a bash, troll, flame, wine thread here. I am trying to apply scientific method to the problem. Take each possible explaination, no matter how radical, and eliminate one by one each possibility, and perhaps introduce new ones until we find a possible explaination, then test it and resolve the mystery of why it works/or doesnt work for certain people...

Perhaps the next step may be, if you updated and your GPS is "less than perfect" was your phone stock or modded in any way during or prior to the update. Just trying to nail down WHY it worked perfectly for some, sort of for some, the same for some and even worse for some. Is it totally random or is there something else going on here? If you want to participate, great, and thank you, if you do not, then please dont.

Define fully and reliably. Before I edited my post I said the poll was invalid which I will now say again since you said you are trying to use the scientific method. Define sucks. If you want to get all scientific, and ignore how small the sample size is and how biased the sample will be given the members if this site, then you have to be more clear and leave your biases at the door. I realize we are both trying to not flame each other - just saying, as you mentioned, that for your purpose a new poll should be made.

Many people that manually pulled the update may still be using the "Use Wireless Network" feature, instead of only using the "Use GPS Satellites" which doesnt address the GPS issue.

I am using gps satellite only, and it is working better after the update...

All I have aimed to do on this forum was share information and help others enjoy their phone and work thru the bugs and issues.

Instead people want to piss moan argue epeen and bullshift. It is not unreasonable to expect something to work. Being strung along by a company sucks. The selfishness and egotism on this forum makes me funking sick. There are people who claim their GPS is fine, and then they tell those who still have trouble to "shut up, you are ruining the forum by using it the way it is intended... asking questions and sharing info". It is not your forum! If the.mods.see.fit.to merge or delete or whatever, that's up to them. Who are you "members" to tell others how to use the forum. Complaining about someone complaining is twice is bad because it makes you a complaining hypocrite.
If your GPS works great.. if it doesn't, I'm sorry I want.to help find out.why and maybe a real fix... if you are tired of reading GPS threads, Stop reading GPS threads... so simple a caveman could do it..

Android itself is about openness and community, sharing info etc. Not about egos and childish agueing and whining.

A big thanks for.those who over the.last few.months shared info, helped, and contributing to the community in a possitive way. Good Luck with your phones.

To all the whining, flaming, ego stroking, trolls, it is you who ruin communities like this..

IM DONE!

IF you don't want to participate in the poll don't... don't.. simple. Yea, small data pool, I never said the data was sufficient to make a solid conclusion...

You want to talk to me about scientific methods, troubleshooting, problem solving... I have a college degree.in electronics and electrical engineering. I work for the largest electrical company in the state troubleshooting electronic systems in large office buildings... anyway.

Saw what you will, trash me all you want, I don't care.. I will never read it.

That sucks man, I'll miss the solid reasoning around here...

I'm sorry everything devolved to this...

That's freaking awesome man. I'm glad I could be here for you to project upon.

The new update did NOT do anything for GPS problem here. GPS hasn't worked from day one and I never expect it to. That way, I'll never be disappointed.

I maintain the phones for my family, we have three Captivates. All box stock, not rooted or lag fixed, nothing changed.

Phone 1, Received the message (pushed) performed the update, went flawlessly, and GPS works. Checked a variety of ways, one of which was against my Garmin.

Phones 2 & 3, Once mine was done I decided to "look" for the update, pulled it manually, did the update, same results, no problems.

For what it's worth:
Yes, I know in fact their are GPS issues with some of the phones, two of my friends have buggy GPS, however it's only one aspect of this phone and in my mind in no way makes this phone the horrible phone people are making it out to be. And I'm not advocating for Samsung, nor do I work for them or any carrier. I'm simply an enthusiast with a lot of experience on a variety of smartphone platforms and I'm here to say there is _NO_ perfect phone. Especially smartphones.

Cheers... :)

I voted "Manually "Pulled" update- GPS works in all aspects" but for me I think there would be value in a category called "Manually "Pulled" update- GPS is much improved". I have a hard time saying that it is is completely fixed. Before the update I would give the GPS performance a grade of 50/100. It was not completely broken but was mostly unusable. After the update I would give it an 80/100. It is now usable but I think it could still be better. I went for a 1 hour road bike ride with My Tracks this weekend and it tracked me very well even under heavy tree cover. The track was never more than about 30ft off of the actual road I was on and never dropped. On the other hand, in a vehicle moving using Google Navigation, I still get dropped signal regularly with the phone in the center console area. Just my 2 cents...

Sonorous. I found similar reslults. I have come to the conclusion that the GPS reception is just not as strong as others. I had a BB Bold on my front seat running ATT Nav. I had the Captivate with update, on the dashboard running Google Nav for 30 minute trip. As long as the Captivate stayed on the dash my navigation was pretty good although there were a couple of drops. When I put it on the seat next to the BB it lost lock very often. The BB never dropped. That seems to me to indicate a week GPS antenna system-- hence a hardware problem so I think, although as others have said the GPS is now optibmized, and does perform better, I don't think it can ever be as good as say a BB or other smart phone. I hope I am proven wrong.

The only improvement I see with this update is that it gives you wrong information quicker than before. That's all. It's still very inacurate.

That's freaking awesome man. I'm glad I could be here for you to project upon.

You're right. I didnt mean to take it all out on you. I had a couple of people screweing with me the last few days and I was only trying to help them. One even sent some nasty PMs which I reported. Your post just happened to be the last one I read after I was already in a crappy mood. I thought I made myself clear what I meant by sucking; " ..or does other wierd things that hinders your ability to us it fuctionally as you would on any other smartphone with propperly fuctioning GPS, then for all intensive purposes, it sucks." So you asking again to clarify it again.... Not a big deal but I was already on edge.

So I publicly apologize, I did not mean to blast it all at you.

Since I updated, My GPS worked OK for about a day (except Nav was garbage). Now it is dead as a rock. Withing the last few days, my battery life has gone to hell too. After 7 hours it was at 24%, the most used battery item was a voice call at 15minuts.. WTF So at that rate a 1 hour call would have killed my battery from full to empty . I had done nothing different to it since I got about 18-24 regular use hours out of it just a few days ago. I did a factory restet (again) yesterday. Today, gps is still broken and battery lasted just over 8 hours. The ONLY use today was a 10 minute phone call and about 5 minuts of the display on...

So, as much as it pains me, I am going to try to return the phone to Best Buy (even though my 30 days are up) and see what they can do. I would like to just go back to using my old phone for a few more months until a new Moto or HTC high end Android hits ATT before Christmas (so I hear), then snag one of them. I need a reliable phone that can do the things I need it to do and last a whole day. I cant spend so much time always screwing with it just to make it work right.. and I dont believe I should have to.

Peace!
