First of I just want to say I love this phone. I'm glad I didn't let the negative reviews sway me. Some just want every little thing to be the best and complain about something. Those at the people that wasn't the newest and the best every time something comes out. Ok that being said

1. Is there a way to turn the Virgin mobile sound off when you turn on or off the phone? I could do it on the rumor touch...can't find it on here.

2. Should I root the phone and go gingerbread or ice cream? I don't really know the pros to it but I do know the cons...brick! And I'm scared of that. Is it easy and can you undo it?I don't want to right now so I'm not asking how...just input. Thanks everyone, you've been so much help.

1. You need root access to be able to modify the files for that.

2. I would recommend it, but that is definitely your choice. It's very very very hard to brick this phone. It can be undone.

There are guides stickied in the all things root subforum, and a ton of helpful threads in the "All Things Root Guide" sticky. Check those out if you start wanting to know how.
 
That's funny,I was reading your how to mood thing when you replied. I probably will. Once I start reading about stuff like this I don't stop until I actually root the phone. So what are the pros to ginger bread or ics and what's a good mod for both

So far as I know, there is currently no ICS ROM that has camera working, which is why I'm going with Gingerbread.

Re-ROMing is easy, if a tad tedious (gotta reinstall the apps).
 
I can just put all my apps on an sd card right, no need to download again? But what's the advantage to gingerbread? I mean so far I've only seen one app I wanted that had one function that wouldn't work on froyo and that was an equalizer. Can anyone tell me what the advantages are? I'm not trying to be smart but why do people risk messing up a phone for a new ROM? There has to be a good reason and I'm trying to find out why. I'm trying to convince myself :-)

Also does Swype work cause I really love it

Depends on the ROM. CM7 is more of a Android feel and MIUI is more of an iOs feel. You get a lot of extra functions and customizations and also performance upgrades.

And yes, Swype does work, just need to get a third party keyboard that has it.
