TWRP question: Unlocked boot loader required?

Yes another noob question: I have a RAZR HD MAXX, I'm rooted, running JB 4.1.2, and Titanium Backup Pro. I have not unlocked the boot loader. I like the idea of being able to do nandroid backups (with TWRP). Do I have to unlock the boot loader to install TWRP and do nandroid backups or is what I have currently good enough.

Thanks!

Im guessing here mate (because ive never had a locked bootloader so im not completely sure what it means lol) but im guessing you would have to unlock it and root the phone to use a custom recovery like twrp

Lol i know mate sorry :)
Just did a wee bit of research and im glad to say my guesswork was wrong :)
No need to unlock bootloader unless you wana flash roms. I think youll have to be rooted to make nandroids though ('think' lol)

It really depends on the device for the being rooted part. As for the bootloader, it usually has to be unlocked, in order to install a fully functional twrp. Some locked devices where there is no signature checks on the recovery partition have altered versions of twrp or cwm that are designed to help with their 2nd init booting of roms. Methods such as kexec or bootstrapping are 2nd init booting that hijacks the booting of the device to make it boot into the custom recovery to them allow you to boot a custom rom over the normal stock rom instead of replacing it.
