Welcome to the forums, tweetypie!
Is there any chance you set Hangouts to be your default messaging/texting app?
You can check by heading into Hangouts, Settings, and then SMS and see if it is set as your means of texting.

Have you tried downloading a third party messaging app like Handcent and see if you can text with that?

Did the icon disappear from the app drawer as well? If not, you can long-press it in the app drawer and drag it to your homescreen.
