Root U8800 Hints & Tips

G'day, There doesn't seem to be too much going on in this section, so I thought I'd start something.

* z4root works to root the phone.

* Titanium Backup Pro can be used to freeze and/or uninstall applications. I have frozen:
Hi Space
Huawei IME
Layar

* I have uninstalled:
Aldiko
UNO
Prince Of Persia
Bubble Smash(?)

* If you have trouble with the wifi disconnecting and/or not connecting, change the wifi sleep policy (Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Wi-Fi Settings -> (menu button) -> Advanced) to 'Never'.

* If you have 'Never' as the wifi sleep policy, the app 'Auto Wifi Toggle' (free version here: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.appspot.eikatou0.autowifionoff) works a treat to keep it disabled when theres no wifi around, or leave it enabled when there is automatically.

* In the system INFO screen (*#*#INFO#*#* in dialer), alot of X5s will show 'Overvoltage' for the battery health. This appears to be normal?

* If you have trouble with random reboots, it is likely due to being in areas of poor reception and the phone swapping from 2G -> 3G -> 2G rapidly. To make the phone far more reliable, goto the system INFO screen (*#*#INFO#*#* in dialer) -> Phone info -> "Set preferred network type:" and choose "WCDMA preferred". Putting the phone into 2G mode only will actually make it LESS reliable.

Anyone got any more?

I factory reset my phone as something was stopping it from sleeping.

Interesting things to note after a factory reset:
- Aldiko, UNO, Bubble Blast and Prince Of Persia all stayed gone. When you uninstall using Titanium, they STAY gone

I got sick of the message "continuing will lead to charges" (or something similiar) when swapping from wifi to 2G/3G, so I did a bit of research and found how to stop that. This is how I did it, entirely on the handset itself.
Things you will need:

  1. Run z4root and choose 'temporary' mode (unless you want permanent of course)
  2. Open Root Explorer and nagivate to /system/
  3. Tap on the Mount r/w button at the top of the screen
  4. Find the file build.prop and long press on it. Choose Permissions and change the permission grid from 644 to 777, then hit apply/ok.

    644 in grid format:
    Read x x -
    Write x

Hey guys, just wanted to say thanks for these tips. I just got an X5 and I'm absolutely loving it. I have rooted it and am currently researching custom ROMs. Really appeals to my nerdy side. However I have been having issues with random reboots. Great to see a possible solution for this, will post back with results and any tips that I find.

I have bought the Huawei u8800 (Titan) which I believe is also known as the X5 and am looking for a quick and easy way to root his without bricking it. Those who have rooted theirs using z4oot, could you confirm 2 things?

1) Do you have the Ideos X5 or the Huawei? (As in, did you buy it called one or the other?)

2) Those who used z4root, was it with the stock rom or with an updated custom rom?

Many thanks.

I've only had mine for a month and I've gone and rooted it...I feel so reckless :)

I didn't have any problems rooting the phone with Z4Root, just a couple of little heart attack moments and it needed a couple of attempts to do so.

bought & installed Titanium Backup and did a back-up after rooting (I have previously backed up data using the Huawei HiSense software on the PC)

Have also bought and installed Root Explorer which works well too but trying to do a file search on it froze the entire phone and I had to re-boot (battery removal) to fix it.

All working fine now.

Now I did all this because of reading this thread...I too want to remove Bubble Bash, Iron Man 2 and few other pre-installed aps. I want to keep Aldiko because I actually use it to gain access to the huge library of free classic books that I have been enjoying re-discovering. (Currently Reading Captain Blood).

Now, with my version of Titanium Backup I cannot un-install the pre-installed games like the ones mentioned earlier because according to Tbu...no apk can be found.

So I'd like to know how these pre-installed game "launchers" can be removed. I appreciate these don't take up much room it's not a space issue I am having it more the nagging annoyance factor that they are there and I won't use them.

If you can talk me through the process you used to uninstall these games would be much appreciated.

Actually, from the Titanium Backup website in their Q&A section there is a trhead there that explains things.

I managed to find and delete the apk's for BubbleBash, IronMan etc etc and delete them with no problems.

the apk files for the pre installed bloat is buried deep in directories, it would seem for some that the files are not always in the same directory.
