Uber-n00b question on Android version

torquey

Newbie
OK, so I'm probably an idiot...

I Got my X10 just before New Years, and am pretty sure it is on 2.1. I am as updated as the phone thinks I should be. My contacts allow me to link to FB...

Anyway, when I look at the 'About Phone' screen, it shows Firmware version 1.6, and I don't have a listing for 'Android version' like I have seen on some screen shots here.

So this has nothing do do with my Android version?

firmware version is your android version. so if it says 1.6 thats what you are on.
if you want to update officially you need to download SEUS and then follow the instructions when you run it.
if you on AT&T and want 2.1 you will have to do it yourself but this will void your warranty albeit there are ways to get back to official firmware.
check out the root section and the masses of threads on this nature.

Yes what KTP said. I am on ATT and was unsure at first about rooting and upgrading etc. but I will say it was quick and painless and you learn alot of customizing your phone. I upgraded to 2.1 and have a custom ROm in my phone. Who knows when I would actually see the update if I were to wait on ATT.

What sucks is that there is so many more Android apps in the app market for Android 2.1 than for 1.6.

At least 1.6 is Angry Bird friendly if I'm not mistaken.

Hopefully ATT will get their act together and join the rest of the world.

And with Android on the x10...getting closer and closer to a great underground release of a 2.2 with all the features...the future is bright for those who root.

I never liked the idea of rooting my phone. But T-mobile have always took too long when it comes to releasing firmware, so I decided to root and debrand, and I was glad I did.

Now I have rooted, debranded, installed xRecovery and installed Eminence ROM. I also plan to install FreeX10 2.2 ROM when it is complete, and Gingerbread 2.3 when that is complete (which could be a very long time lol)

My point is, I didn't like the idea of rooting, nevermind anything else. Because I thought it would brake my phone, and I knew nothing, not even how to root, but now I know how to do everything lol Root/Flash/Debrand/xRecover/ROMs/Themes/ADB/etc.

I was very glad to do it, and still glad I did, there's no way I could cope with the stock ROM (ew) lol :)

would you kindly link me to to a rooting tutorial please :)

Let me know what firmware version you are on and I will guide you to the easiest and quickest way to root :)

Hey, I've got the same as the OP, I'm on:

Model: x10a
firmware: 1.6
Baseband: 1.1.32

Could you please link me to the quickest/easiest to 2.1 or higher?

It would be very much appreciated. :)

I was watching a guide and it said 'do not mount the sd card'

Now does that mean i go into the settings and unmount it, then connect it to my pc?

Just make sure you have USB debugging turned on, and when connecting the USB do not mound it, so basically just connect it and do nothing lol

I'm using the superoneclick thing, and it says if it continues to loop, then to turn off debugging. I don't know if you have much info on this one, but i tried turning off debugging and it just froze the program on my computer.. what should I do?

this kept happening on me when I rooted. While it is in process and loops, just keep switching debugging off and on. It should work eventually

How many times should it be turned on/off before it works? With it on it just loops, and when i turn it off it loops. Switching back and fourth.. loops. Constant alerts from my phone each time it loops too.

EDIT: Superuser finally appeared! But it failed the test, then it left a file on my SD card. What do I do now?

Any error codes? copy them here

"An error occured and su was not updated. A zip file (su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip) please reboot into recovery mode and flash it to update your su binary."

Will you be on here in about an hour n half as I just need to go sumwer but I can help u wen I get bak, I realised ur on ATT and its limited to ways to root it

You guys are the effing bomb. Can I go back if I root and install 2.1/2.2? I know it sounds lame, but I'd prefer not to void my warranty if I can avoid it. I'll probably do it either way, though.

What's the best method for us poor ATT-bound bastards?

X10a
Firmware: 1.6
Baseband: 1.1.32
Kernel: 2.6.29-rel semc-android@SEMC #2
Build: R2CA016

Thanks again.

Well thanks to the geniuses at XDA you can do anything to your phone and still unvoid your warranty. For example, I have had 2.2 roms installed, but there are ways to go back to T-Mobile branded software as if I had always been on it lol
