If it had better features and a better interface than Android, why couldn't it compete?

If Canonical can get oem's to ship it on their devices, and people like it.... competitor.

And Conanical has pletty of "persuasion" funds to play with.

Unfortunately, features don't make an operating system viable. If they did you might be running BeOS or NextOS today. And if features are what sells phones I don't think iOS would be in the position it is today.

I'm honestly not that familiar with Canonical but wonder where their "persuasion" funds will come from if they don't charge OEM's for the OS. Perhaps they will charge for the porting effort, which means they will still need to be competitive with other options.

This is a valid point. However, if Canonical gets X of the profit, where Y is the sales cost, then they could very well have a donate feature. Or perhaps the apps they have into the OS, such as Amazon, is a sponsorship deal. At least they have Amazon built into 12.10. Who knows, though? I just think its a neat concept, personally. I would love to see something new for phones. It could be why the Pacman ROM appeals to me, as well. Its different. While being the same. So, that being said, I think it could be cool. So long as the features baked in don't break what I need.

That's true. And of lot of devices like routers, firewalls and NAS have embedded Linux operating systems.

Linux is a great operating system and probably the most popular for web servers. It's strength has always been on the server side, but Ubuntu is one of the leading distros for desktop environments, and I think it would be cool to run linux on a phone too, especially as the screen sizes grow to 5 inches and larger. I just don't think Ubuntu has much chance of making a dent if the market shares of Android, iOS and WP8 in the mobile phone market.

Really in my opinion, it would depend on marketing. The phone it was on, how it was advertised, etc. Imagine a quad core phone, sleek Ubuntu OS, 5 inch screen. And here's what I would hope. Access to the Ubuntu software repository. I know I would use it for on the fly development.

So how does this relate to Ubuntu for Android | Devices | Ubuntu? Is that version available yet? After watching the video for Ubuntu for Android it seems like the latest version is just that base with a phone interface added. Kind of like Windows RT for the Surface.

BTW, I agree that it would fun to play with, but not a serious competitor to Android, iOS and WP8 in the big picture of mobile OS's.

Yea, great for a developer or hacker but ask someone you know with an iPhone to imagine that and enjoy the blank look on their face.

The biggest benefit would possibly be a greatly improved update system.

This re-flashing roms is not the most efficient, but at least works. Which is more than we can say about carrier/manufacturer updates. A phone that updates regularly like a desktop is where we need to be headed and I hope this may be the one to do it.

Yes, but it may not be fully functional. That is a release for development.

But would it be able to be modded for other phones? I think the whole chroot/vnc thing is really outdated compared to this haha it would be nice to have an actual desktop on our phones
