Ubuntu!!!!

I used Mint last year but came back to Ubuntu in April. I actually quite like Unity but if I wanted classic it's as easy as selecting it from the login screen.
For now at least. Ubuntu 11.10 is dropping the classic desktop for good. That and even now, the classic Gnome desktop is different from the base mint desktop in several important ways. for example, mint uses a single panel, as opposed to two, and uses all the mint specific tools (software manager, mint menu, mint back up, updater and the resipin software), which ubuntu doesn't use (though Ubuntu now has it's own software center - though it is not quite as nice as mint's). The point is that the experience is noticeably different (and IMHO better) than on classic ubuntu, so it's not just a matter of switching to a classic session.

Of course what works for me is not waht works for all, but I wuold urge you to at least give Mint a try, who kows, you mightlike it.

Personally I had to alter it a bit and make it more like a mac (panel on top, dock on bottom). then again I set up all my computers that way regardless of OS - which is probably part of the reason why Unity and Gnome 3 shell bother me a bit.

I can't wait to see what Ubuntu does with Unity though. I really hope that they have been listening to comments and user reactions, and include some much needed revisions to the UI and the unity launcher.

I fixed my touchpad! Now to migrate :)

Dude, what hardware are you running and how did you do it? I'm having problems all of a sudden with 11.04. Crazy thing is that the touchpad worked perfectly out of the box with all the clicks and whistles I could want. Then at some point maybe a week ago it broke. I wonder if it's due to a kernel upgrade. In any case I can't get it to work for the life of me.

I have a HP dm4. It's really frustrating. I'm this close to wiping the OS and reinstalling just to see what happens.

Any help would be great.

PS I've been to all the forums and I can't find an adequate solution.

Baillou, get Pointing Devices from the Store
Tell me what it identities your mouse input as

My problem was in trying to fix my Right click I caused Ubuntu to stop recognizing my trackpad as an ElanTech one but instead it recognized it as a Generic PS/2 Wheel Mouse.

I couldn't fix it so I reinstalled

I did some more Googling and mapped middle click to two finger tap (synclient2=2) and mapped right click to three finger tap (synclient3=3)

I'm not sure what you mean by identities. If I do "xinput list" my mouse shows up as "synaptics". The driver should be psmouse something or other.
What's weird is that the scroll works fine and I can move the pointer around. But clicking left or right doesn't work.

Try
Code:
synclient -l
in terminal and paste your result
I meant identifies (aurocorrect :o)

I can't get my left or right click to work either so I map them to multitouch, BTW

Okay, I made the changes, but no effect. :( Do you think I can check something in Mint 11 and copy the settings? After all the touchpad works fine in Mint. But I wouldn't know what to change.

If you copied the entire output and ran it in Ububtu, it could work.

so i decided to do it.....

i'm duel booting with win7.

i figured out flash and have that working and got my music and dropbox installed, along with my bookmarks for Chromium.

The taskbar is driving me mental. keeps getting stuck and also dissapearing
Cant run commands at startup.
Otherwise going well so far

Having fun with my fat32 SD card today. All of a sudden it shows 0 bytes free, 0 bytes used. It lets me delete and access files, but says theres no space when adding files.

10GB backup followed by format I think :(

I'm finally getting into Docky. Now I don't even use a bottom panel. I like it more than I thought I would. In fact now I'm wondering why Ubuntu ships with the sidebar thingy at all. Why not just make Docky a default feature, and maybe tweak it a little and make it extra shiny?

who knows....?

You're AWESOME! It worked like a charm. I had all but given up. Thanks for all the help.
No problem! I just saw it and thought of you when it said that a recent update caused the issue.

I quite like the sidebar but it needs a lot of work. It has far less functionality that the Windows 7 one (I cant even easily make it stick.. wtf?)
I get the impression that these things are to be fixed for 11.10

I ask myself the same question. I use Docky on mint and placed at the bottom of the screen (like on Mac). It's a little simply, but it looks good, light on resources, has a few nice animations, is fast and is very stable. for systems with light resources it is freaking fantastic. If you have resources to spare, then something like GLX-Dock/Cairo Dock or AWN is a fantastic option.

on windows Rocketdock is easily the best dock available. IN fact, IMHO it is one of the nicest and easiest to configure 3rd party docks on any OS. I often wish that it was ported to Linux.
