UK OTA Update RC8 to RC??

No offence taken. I just have to be very carefull of the words I choose. I want to give info when possible but as timescales always slip I don't want people saying "you said it was coming on Thursday!". I have the info because of the trust people have in me and don't want to abuse it. I guess I kinda painted myself info a corner.

Why are t-mobile being all secretive about it. Why not just say there will be an update in next couple of weeks or days.

Because they want to get it right. If they put a buggy update out it will cause dissatisfaction and increase calls to customer service.

but they could give out information about the changes, timescales, we all know that they can slip sometimes but i would rather know there was one coming out and it be delayed then not knowing.

True but if some of the news reports are to be believed then only the US will be able to access paid applications initially and no one else. Hopefully this is wrong but I think that the release of the paid stuff on the Market will have absolutely no bearing on when we get the update.

i personally think the 'open source' part of Android is what's causing all the questions.
with Android being open source, we can easily see what's being worked on and what's coming next (e.g. cupcake), but what end users don't seem to understand is that it takes a long time for things like cupcake to go from design to finished article.

if windows mobile users could see the same info for their o/s, then the web would have been awash with 'where the f*** is my 6.5???' for the last 6 months.
in the same way as we have with cupcake now.

although i don't see why the UK is behind the US in their release schedule, its certainly not a language problem, we even have the American keyboard layout!

:D maybe Google and Tmo are both prior colonists !!! :p

yeah do you know anything new, been 7 days since yon told us soon, have there been any delelpments, i don't expect to recieve it over the weekends as nothing is ever done then.

I don't have any new info.

And how many PM's have you had that goes along the lines of

" I know you cant say on the forum but you can tell me I promise I won't tell anyone"

We will get it when we get it , simple as that. I'm guessing that more effort is currently being put into rolling out the paid apps onto the market, marketing the next version of the handset and T-Mobile negotiating when they can get it after the end of Vodafone's exclusivity

Strangely enough none. Wouldn't matter anyway, I aint got any more info.

"soon"
"end of the month"
"late jan"
"early feb"
"prob 20th"

gossip gathered from various sources but utter bllx all round.

it would just have been easier if they had said, "actually, we don't give a cr@p, it'll be updated at some point and you'll find out when your phone changes."

what is pretty crappy is T-Mobile's approach to this. any exec with half a head would have at least an eye on boards like this and future sales will be significantly driven by the GOOD experience of early adopters. the phone itself is not going to wow the tech hungry public; the desire is for the OS. so at least a formal notification in amongst all the other useless txts from Tmo might at least have pacified some. the complete lack of any formal notification makes it all the less impressive.

it is a HUGE disappointment as one of the values of open source is that it can and is upgraded on a regular basis to improve the OS. if Tmo can't/won't support it then the whole thing will simply not fly. when the iphones died O2 simply replaced them straight away. Tmo aren't showing that sort of upfront support.

personally i have serious mis-givings about this sort of delay. it is cannot be indicative of a desire to produce the perfect upgrade as, with the ultimate delivery of "cupcake" (whenever we get that!!) there will almost certainly require another upgrade in the very near future. it's getting to the point that the two may come together.

does that sound bitter? probably because i am.

but i feel better for sharing that.

You share away my friend. I can understand exactly where you are coming from. To me, it is like water off a ducks back. I guess I have been in the software industry for way too long, it has turned me into a cynic.

Life is easier being a dedicated cynic, for one I am normally being proved correct, secondly if I am proved wrong I get a nice surprise.

Whilst I don't have the same experience to draw upon as ageless, I am rapidly becoming cynical towards T-Mobiles responce to earl adopters. That said, as the G1 is the first smartphone I have owned, I am still enjoying having the internet in my pocket.

Get their act together over what?

So far we are are not missing out on much,
paid apps - so far most of these are free ones people have decided to try to get some money out of! no real new amazing ones yet.
the ability to report comments - good but not in desperate need of this.
voice search - i personally won't use this alot, especially in public
lattitude is it? - would be nice
save mms messages - would be good to not need the app to to it but i have the app and not to bothered.

I used to be overly excited about this update but we are not in desperate need of it unless you wan't to start paying for apps you allready have.

The good stuff is away off yet, like auto rotate if they do it, soft screen would be good so don't always have to open it, use steel currently but would like to just use browser. and a couple of others.

You forget the baseband update which extends battery life.
