Ultra keyboard and rooting

so it seems like this is so far the only forum i've found for droid eris that is helpful..i'm currently reading the sticky on must have apps..i bought the ultra keyboard and set it up...but it still uses the old keyboard..

i've seen/read a lot about rooting..should i do this..and how?
 
I dont know much about that keyboard but sometimes u have to go to ur phones settings then keyboard then check the keyboard off.. Then open up a text message or something and long press where you type... then hit select input method.
 
i thought i did it according to the directions it gave me when i loaded the program up..i never knew about the long press input method..
