(Un)Official World Cup Thread

I'm really surprised by Uruguay. They're a lot better than I thought they were going to be.

I'm going to laugh when Henry goes in and hits one... upper 90 for a game-winning goal.
 
Just to let all the soccer fans know, we launched a World Cup 2010 Themepack for our PhoneFraze game a few days ago. Uruguay are a good side, got a few players in the big clubs in Europe, learn't about Forlan the hard way when his extra time goal knocked Liverpool out the Europa semi finals.

how many times was suarez offside, and how many times did he try to get players booked, ugh.

France should have won, malouda should have been on from the start too.
 
So I thought I would give soccer ANOTHER try since I wasnt going much today and turned on the France/Uruguay game. I seriously think I would have rather watched the bugs outside, what an awful game. So they basically ran around for 90 minutes to finish in a scoreless draw, thats some MAJOR entertainment! Why not have a free kick to determine a winner like hockey does with shootouts? Soccer is almost unwatchable on TV as well because of how its shot. The field is enormous and most of the shots are wide angle shots, looks like a flea circus. You cant really tell who is who, just a bunch of little skinny guys running around. I am astounded people can actually watch this, but I am sure the rest of the world is astounded we can watch a bunch of cars drive around a big oval track too haha Someone wake me up when there is an exciting soccer game, however oxy moronic that seems.
 
I can't believe someone who watched Nascar just complained about how boring soccer is...

I'll admit the France vs. Uruguay game was pretty boring, until that last 10 minutes that is. After Uruguay got the red card it got pretty exciting. Especially with that free kick in stoppage time. Keep in mind this is only pool play. It'll get a lot more exciting once they leave pool play. You won't see anymore ties at that point.

Quite simple really, economics and skill level. You can be dirt poor in a 3rd world country and play soccer. All you need is a couple people, a ball and a couple rocks to mark goals. How do you play American football in a poor country? You cant. How can you play baseball with all the equipment needed in a poor country? You cant. Basketball? No chance.

You also need to take in skill levels. Anyone, and I do mean anyone (with at least one leg) can kick a ball. How many people can throw a spiral with a football and be accurate? How many people can throw a baseball with efficiency and then on the other side, you have to have great hand/eye coordination to hit it. Basketball you need to have great touch to shoot....anyone can kick a soccer ball between two rocks 10 feet apart.
 
I think it's a little unfair that you just summed up soccer in its most simple form. Here, I'll do the rest for you to make it even. How many people can hit an object with a bat? How many people can throw a ball? How many people and throw an object into a basket? Just about anyone.

You missed my point...

Baseball-You need at least a pitcher, batter and people on the bases plus bats balls and gloves. Sorry, but people in less fortunate countries could never afford that. Even if they could, throwing a baseball from a good distance away into a rather small strike zone accurately is NOT something just any kid can do. Same with the hand/eye coordination need to hit that people with effectiveness.

Football-You need a passer, receiver, someone to play the receiver and at least one person to rush the passer and someone to defend. In other words, lots of people. I grew ip playing football and I will tell you that most people can not throw a ball with any accuracy past 10-15 yards, let alone throw a spiral or effective pass to someone running full speed. Then the receiver needs to have the hand/eye coordination to catch the ball on the fly.

Basketball-You need a basketball obviously and then something to put it in. Many people in other countries cant afford the setup. Then if they can, how many people can shoot a basketball into a hoop while running or have an effective jump shot outside of 5 feet? Not many

I am sorry but soccer in comparison is very simple, I see little kids at the park that can kick a ball around to each other and into a goal. How many kids can shoot jump shots, throw a football accurately to a moving target or throw a strike/hit a ball? Not nearly as many. You dont need a ton of people or costly equipment or a high skill level to kick a ball thru a big goal or kick it to someone else and thats the main reason why its played everywhere.
 
I'll agree with it being very cost efficient, which is why it is played so many places. But the argument of it requiring little skill is completely false.

Soccer requires skill for sure, just not as much as throwing a football accurately 25-30 yards, throwing or hitting a fastball and nailing a 15-20 foot jump shot.

On another note, whats with all the humming and buzzing noises thru the whole game? Is that people doing something?
 
Soccer is a great sport for many reasons, and I'm not going to argue its merit. There is a reason this will be the most watched sporting event in history. However, how about that USA game. I feel bad saying it, but the English gifted us our goal. I do believe however that the US came out strong in the second half. I think 1-1 is a fair result and I'm interested in seeing how the rest of the group will turn out. As for who will win I believe that Germany will take it as that is my heritage. I hope the USA go all the way, but I feel a more realistic bet is Germany. Others thoughts?

Obviously you haven't grown up playing football, but I have, to a decent level, and let me tell you, I'm surprised at how many people can't pass a ball accurately to a person 10 yards away. Let alone passing a through ball 40 yards between 2 defenders, perfectly weighted onto a strikers perfectly timed run.

You obviously know nothing about football (maybe sport in general?), and your assumed comments quite make you sound quite simple.

ROFL, saying basketball needs more skill than soccer is just plain stupid. Equipment wise, yea sure its harder to get a basketball game going. But skill wise? C'mon, you would to have never played soccer and basketball to make that statement.

And while I agree soccer can be boring to watch half the time, baseball is boring to watch ALL the time.

I think he was talking about growing up playing American football.

I grew up playing soccer, baseball, and basketball for the first 16 years of my life. I've put in minimal effort into training for baseball and still have been able to compete reasonably well. I've also been able to put in very little effort into basketball and still do quite well. Size makes a pretty big difference in basketball and I was able to rely on it. I've had to train and train for soccer to be able to compete at the level of others. Kicking a ball between two rocks hardly does the sport justice. How about redirecting a cross into the goal off your head? Or what about chesting a ball down right into a volley? Doing all this while playing full speed, running the whole time is one of the most difficult things I've encountered.
 
I know, I meant that he's talking about football (football) like he's played/watched it before, I doubt he's played any sports tbh from the way he's talking about what he thinks skill is.
 
Hey guys just a suggestion here. Can we keep the soccer/futball/football hate out of here so the ones of us that do enjoy the sport can discuss the tournament. Though a do agree that most of the haters have no idea how difficult and physically demanding of a sport soccer truly is.
