I've recently tried to access hidden menus on my S4 SGH-M919, running rooted stock 4.4.2, but it doesn't seem to work. I read somewhere that it had to do with the modem or the baseband, but I'm not sure.

would there be anyway to get past it then to allow the codes to work?

If the facility to use the Samsung codes has been removed by the carrier in their firmware, then no. A for instance is the AT&T Google Edition firmware has not got the *#1234# code to give your firmware version details whilst the International models have it. It would appear to be mainly/only the U.S. carrier branded variants that have these removed I've discovered, so far.
